Enrollment is open for the next Horizon HypnoBirth® cohort — and I wanted to share a bit about what the program actually involves, because I get a lot of questions.

It's a 5-week childbirth education course based on the HypnoBirthing® Mongan Method — one of the most well-researched and widely used birth preparation programs in the world.

Over 12.5 hours (spread across 5 sessions), expectant couples learn:
✔ The science of how your body is designed to give birth
✔ Breathing and relaxation techniques that genuinely work during labor
✔ How to create a calm, positive birth environment
✔ How birth partners can actively support the process
✔ How to navigate any birth scenario with confidence

We meet Wednesday evenings or Sunday mornings, here in San Rafael. Zoom option available for Bay Area families. Small groups only — maximum 6 couples per cohort.

If you or someone you know is expecting and wants to feel prepared (not just survive the experience), I'd love to connect.

Most people grow up hearing that birth is supposed to hurt — a lot. But what if much of that pain is actually driven by something we can work with?

It's called the fear-tension-pain cycle. Dr. Grantly Dick-Read identified it in the 1940s, and decades of research have backed it up.

In short: fear triggers the body's fight-or-flight response. Muscles tighten — including in the uterus. A tense uterus working against itself hurts significantly more than a relaxed one. The pain creates more fear. The cycle continues.

HypnoBirthing® is a science-backed childbirth education program that teaches expectant couples the exact techniques to interrupt this cycle — breathing, relaxation, and mindset work that genuinely changes the experience.

Families who complete the program report up to 50% reduction in pain medication use.

I teach a 5-week course here in San Rafael (and via Zoom for Marin County and Bay Area families). If you or someone you know is expecting and wants to feel genuinely prepared and calm going into birth — I'd love to chat.

One of the questions I hear most often:
"I'm planning a hospital birth - can I still use HypnoBirthing?"
The answer: Absolutely! HypnoBirthing works in ANY birth setting.
Here's the beautiful thing about these techniques - they're YOURS. No one can take them away, regardless of where or how you birth.
Hospital birth?
Use breathing and relaxation to stay calm during admission, monitoring, and any interventions you choose or need.
Birth center?
Create that peaceful atmosphere while having midwife support nearby.
Home birth?
Embrace the comfort of your own space with confidence and preparation.
Cesarean birth?
Yes! These techniques help with pre-surgery anxiety, staying present during the birth, and recovery afterward.
The goal isn't to force one type of birth. The goal is to give you tools that serve you wherever your unique birth journey leads.
You can be calm, prepared, and empowered no matter where your baby is born.

Seeing is believing. These videos help rewire the fear-based images we've absorbed from media and replace them with what birth can truly be when you're prepared, relaxed, and working with your body.
This is why we watch positive birth videos in every HypnoBirthing class I teach!

Sharing positive birth stories can make a profound difference for the families you support. When expectant parents read real accounts of calm, confident births, it helps them reframe what’s possible and reinforces the HypnoBirthing philosophy that mindset matters.

The HypnoBirthing Birth Stories page is a treasure trove of inspiration — real families sharing their empowering experiences with HypnoBirthing.
Use these stories in your classes, share them with your clients, and help spread the ripple of positive birth experiences.

Have you ever visualized meeting your baby?
Not just thinking about it, but really SEEING it in your mind? Feeling the weight of your baby in your arms, smelling that newborn smell, hearing their first sounds?
This isn't just daydreaming - it's a powerful birth preparation technique.
Here's why visualization works:
Your brain doesn't always distinguish between vividly imagined experiences and real ones. Athletes use visualization to improve performance. Surgeons use it to prepare for complex procedures. And birthing parents can use it to prepare for labor.
Try this simple visualization right now:
Close your eyes. Imagine yourself in labor, breathing calmly and deeply. Picture your body opening easily and naturally. See your baby moving smoothly down. Visualize the moment you first hold your baby.
Notice how your body responds? That calm, confident feeling? You can create that during actual labor.
In HypnoBirthing classes, we practice specific visualization scripts that help you:

Release fear and tension
Trust your body's natural ability
Stay focused during labor
Create the birth environment you want

Your mind is powerful. Let's use it to support your birth! 🌿

Let's bust a common birth myth:
MYTH: "Labor is supposed to be excruciating - that's just how it is."
TRUTH: Pain in labor is often caused by fear and tension, not the birth process itself.
Here's what really happens:
When you're afraid, your body releases stress hormones that cause muscles to tighten and work against each other. This creates a cycle: fear → tension → pain → more fear.
But when you're relaxed and calm? Your body produces natural endorphins (your own pain relief!) and your muscles can work efficiently together.
HypnoBirthing doesn't promise pain-free birth (though some families experience exactly that). What it DOES promise:

Tools to stay calm and reduce fear
Techniques to work WITH your body
Knowledge that builds confidence
Skills that help in ANY birth scenario

Think of it like this: Would you run a marathon without training? Birth is physical work - and mental preparation matters just as much as physical preparation.

Here's something many people don't realize about birth...
Your birth partner isn't just there to hold your hand. They're your advocate, your comfort coach, and your anchor during labor.
In HypnoBirthing, we train partners to be active participants, not helpless bystanders. They learn:
🤝 Specific massage techniques to ease discomfort
🤝 Breathing cues to help you stay focused
🤝 Comfort measures for every stage of labor
🤝 How to advocate for your birth preferences
🤝 When to speak up and when to stay quiet
One of the most common things I hear from partners after taking HypnoBirthing classes?
"I finally felt like I knew how to help instead of just watching."
Whether it's your spouse, partner, doula, mother, or friend - preparing together transforms the entire birth experience.
