Sometimes the best orthodontic treatment starts years before the braces go on. 😎

We first met this patient when she was just 11 years old, and she had significant crowding with very limited space for her developing permanent teeth. At the time, it looked very likely that we would eventually need to remove four permanent premolars to create enough room.

But rather than jumping straight into treatment, Dr. Peterson developed a plan to give those permanent teeth the best opportunity to erupt.

We started by:
• Removing select baby teeth at the right time
• Placing space maintainers to preserve valuable space
• Monitoring her growth and eruption as the permanent teeth came in

Once she was ready for comprehensive treatment, Dr. Peterson followed many of the Pitts Protocols he learned from his mentor, world-renowned orthodontist Dr. Tom Pitts. These techniques focus not only on straightening teeth, but also on developing broad arches, creating beautiful smile esthetics, and achieving an ideal functional bite.

🛠️ Treatment included:
• Pitts21 Pro self-ligating braces
• Broad arch development
• Strategic bracket positioning
• Significant IPR (slenderizing) to create additional space
• Elastics for bite correction
• Enamel contouring for the finishing touches

And the best part? We were able to achieve this result without removing any permanent teeth! 🙌

💫 The result is a broad, beautiful smile, properly aligned teeth, and a functional bite—all while preserving her natural permanent dentition.

Cases like this are why early orthodontic evaluations can be so valuable. It doesn’t mean every child needs braces early. Sometimes the best treatment at a young age is simply having a plan, preserving space, and knowing when to intervene.

That’s what creating a is all about—the right treatment, at the right time, for the right patient. 😁

This smile transformation was definitely a journey—but the results speak for themselves! 😁

We first met Zoe when she was just 9 years old. She had severe crowding, an anterior crossbite, and developing canines that were headed in the wrong direction.

Why treat a crossbite early? When the upper jaw is trapped behind the lower teeth, correcting that crossbite can help remove the restriction and allow the maxilla to continue growing and developing more normally.

Our goals during Zoe’s first phase of treatment were to:

• Correct the anterior crossbite
• Create space for her crowded teeth
• Make room for the developing canines
• Give those canines the best opportunity to correct their path and erupt naturally

But teeth don’t always cooperate! 😅

Even with adequate space, Zoe’s canines remained significantly delayed and didn’t erupt as we had hoped. A few years later, we began Phase 2 treatment to finish aligning her teeth, perfect her bite, and guide those canines into position.

🛠️ Treatment included:
• Space creation for the canines
• Pitts21 Pro self-ligating braces
• Elastics for bite correction
• In-office diode laser exposure of the delayed canines
- Enamel contouring

Once the canines were close enough, Dr. Peterson used his diode laser to expose them so we could guide them the rest of the way into the smile.

💫 The result?

Take a look at that smile! You’d never know which canines needed a little extra help and which teeth erupted naturally.

That’s what creating a is all about—a broad, balanced, beautiful smile with a healthy, functional bite and attention to every little detail.

Sometimes creating an amazing smile takes time, patience, and a plan that evolves as a child grows. Zoe’s result made the journey completely worth it!

Did you know a thumb-sucking habit can actually change the way a child’s jaws and teeth develop?

This sweet patient had a significant thumb-sucking habit that resulted in:
• Very narrow upper and lower arches
• A severe anterior open bite
• A tongue-thrust swallowing pattern

While not every thumb-sucking habit leads to changes this dramatic, prolonged habits can have a significant impact on jaw growth and tooth position.

Because she was seen early, Dr. Peterson was able to intervene before these problems became even more severe. Our goals were to eliminate the thumb habit, widen her arches, close the open bite, and help her establish a healthy tongue posture and swallowing pattern.

🛠️ Early treatment included:
• Expander with a thumb habit crib
• Upper and lower Pitts21 self-ligating braces
• Front elastics to close the open bite
• Tongue training exercises

⏱️ In just 12 months, we corrected the major concerns and gave her a healthy foundation for future growth. She’ll now wear retainers while Dr. Peterson continues to monitor her development until she’s ready for her second phase of treatment.

💫 Early treatment isn’t about putting braces on every child—it’s about recognizing developing problems at the right time and guiding growth while children are still growing.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. Most children won’t need treatment at that age, but it’s the ideal time to identify issues before they become more difficult to correct.
