:: What Happens Inside Your Bones? ::

Bone does more than provide structure.

Inside certain bones is marrow, where the body produces red blood cells, many white blood cells, and platelets.

These cells help carry oxygen, support immune function, and allow the blood to clot when needed.

It is one more example of how closely connected the body’s systems are. The skeletal system is not separate from circulation or immune function. The structure supporting the body is also helping sustain it from within.

:: The Skeleton You Have Today ::

Your skeleton is not a finished structure. Bone is living tissue, and it continues changing gradually throughout life.

Movement, rest, injury, age, and the ways we use our bodies all influence that process over time.

At Sandpoint Medical Massage & Bodyworks, we work with the muscles, fascia, joints, and nervous system surrounding the skeleton. Looking at the body as a connected system helps us understand more than just the area that currently hurts.

We’ll be sharing more about the skeletal system throughout the month and how it connects to movement, support, and bodywork.

:: Your Bones Are Living Tissue ::

It is easy to think of bones as the fixed framework underneath the rest of the body.

But bone is living tissue. Throughout life, older bone is continually removed and new bone is formed in its place.

This process allows the skeleton to respond to movement, repeated use, rest, injury, age, and the many ways we use our bodies over time.

At Sandpoint Medical Massage & Bodyworks, much of our work focuses on muscle, fascia, and the nervous system—but none of those systems works separately from the bones and joints beneath them.

The skeleton is not simply holding you upright. It is participating in how you move through every day.

:: A Closer Look at the Skeletal System ::

This month, Sandpoint Medical Massage & Bodyworks is taking a closer look at the skeletal system.

We often talk about muscles, fascia, joints, and the nervous system, but underneath all of that is a living structure that is constantly responding to how we move and use our bodies.

Bones are strong enough to support us, light enough to move efficiently, and filled with living tissue that continues changing throughout our lives.

We even have a bone in the office that shows its inner, honeycomb-like structure. It is a fascinating reminder that bones are much more complex than they appear from the outside.

We’ll be sharing more about the skeletal system over the coming weeks and connecting it back to the work we do here in Sandpoint.

:: Your Bones Are Living Tissue ::

Bones can seem like the fixed framework underneath everything else.

But bone is living tissue. Throughout your life, older bone is continually removed and new bone is formed in its place.

That process helps the skeleton respond to daily movement, repeated loading, periods of rest, injury, age, and many other changes over time.

Your skeleton is not simply holding you upright. It is participating in how your body moves through each day.

At Sandpoint Medical Massage & Bodyworks, much of our work focuses on muscle, fascia, and the nervous system—but all of those tissues move around, attach to, and interact with the skeleton beneath them.

The body is never just one system working alone.

:: Inner and Outer World ::

With every breath, there is an exchange between your inner and outer world.

Air enters.

Oxygen moves into the blood.

Carbon dioxide leaves the body.

This happens thousands of times a day.

Quietly.

Continuously.

Without applause.

The respiratory system is one of the ways we are reminded that we are not separate from the world around us.

We are in relationship with it, breath by breath.

:: The Rib Cage and Diaphragm ::

Breathing is not only a lung function. It is also movement.

The rib cage expands and softens. The diaphragm moves. Muscles through the chest, back, neck, and abdomen participate with every breath.

This week, smoke from the fires has made many of us more aware of breathing and of the air moving between the body and the world around us.

The respiratory system is working quietly all the time, but there are moments when that work becomes much more noticeable.

We’re thinking of everyone affected by the fires and smoke across our community.

:: The Neck and the Breath ::

Breathing is not only a movement of the lungs.

The diaphragm and rib cage do much of the work, but muscles through the neck and upper chest can also participate—especially when the body needs more support for the breath.

This is one reason bodyworkers pay attention to the structures surrounding respiration, not just the chest itself.

The neck, shoulders, rib cage, and diaphragm are part of a larger pattern of movement that changes with stress, activity, rest, and awareness.

Bodywork offers an opportunity to notice those relationships and create a little more space around the breath.

As smoke settles across our community, we’re thinking of everyone who has been affected by the fires this week.

The disruption reaches far beyond the fire lines. Plans change. Work pauses. Families wait for updates. The air itself becomes something everyone has to navigate.

We’re grateful for the emergency personnel and volunteers responding in difficult conditions, and for the many quiet ways people in our region are checking on one another and helping where they can.

For now, we’re simply holding care for everyone living through the uncertainty of it.
