Retirement doesn’t mean stepping away from what gives life meaning.

Friends House resident Ann Worley didn’t discover her calling until age 30, when she left a desk job to pursue nursing. That decision led to a 40-year career in pediatrics, followed by another chapter of service during the COVID pandemic. Today, Ann is still sharing her experience by teaching infant care and child safety and helping expectant parents prepare for what comes next.

Her story is a reminder that retirement doesn’t have to mean stopping what you love. It can mean finding new ways to keep doing what matters to you.

A little friendly competition brought residents and the Friends House team together on the shuffleboard court! ☀️

Residents claimed victory in the first game, but the Friends House team came back to even the score in game two! COO Kadine and Christopher Trump, Director of Admissions, were among those taking on the residents.

And there was some serious athletic talent on hand! A few Friends House residents who recently earned gold medals at the Senior Olympics proudly wore their medals for the occasion.

The afternoon was filled with laughter, friendly competition and plenty of encouragement from the sidelines. Just another example of the connections that make Friends House special.

What started with residents noticing erosion on a hillside has grown into a larger effort to care for the natural landscape at Friends House. 🌾

Members of the resident-led Environment Committee researched solutions and began the work of establishing a native meadow designed to help stabilize the hillside while creating future habitat for pollinators and wildlife.

It’s one example of how residents take an active role in caring for the 62-acre Friends House campus, from native plants and woodlands to other environmental projects across the community.

What a day. 🍂☔

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out for the Friends House Fall Festival and didn’t let a little rain get in the way of a great day together.

Residents welcomed family, friends and neighbors for an afternoon filled with music, food, conversation and plenty of familiar faces. Seeing so many people show up, stay awhile and enjoy the day together made this year’s festival especially memorable.

A special thank you to our generous sponsors whose support helped make the Fall Festival possible, and to Potomac Collective Photography for beautifully capturing so many of the moments you’ll see in these photos.

Active aging looks a little different for everyone. At Friends House, for some residents, it looks like a shuffleboard cue, a little friendly competition and a trip to the Maryland Senior Olympics. 🏅

Friends House residents helped bring the community’s shuffleboard court back to life, spent the season learning and practicing together, and then eight residents took their skills to the 2026 Maryland Senior Olympics.

They came home with Gold, Silver, Bronze and fourth-place finishes, with some residents becoming eligible for the 2027 National Senior Games.

For Active Aging Week, we’re recognizing residents who keep trying new things, staying connected and seeing where their interests take them.

Friends House is featured in the Fall 2026 issue of National Wildlife magazine! 🌿

The story highlights the resident-led work helping native plants, birds, butterflies and other wildlife thrive across our 62-acre Sandy Spring campus. It also shares the stories of Friends House residents Nancy Rea and Susan Thomas, along with some remarkable details, including more than 180 bird species recorded on the property and a monarch tagged at Friends House that traveled nearly 2,000 miles to Mexico.

We’re proud to see this work recognized nationally and to share a closer look at the people and places behind it.
