A floor plan can tell you the square footage. A visit tells you much more.

When you’re exploring a retirement community, pay attention to the moments between the features. How do residents and team members interact? Do shared spaces feel naturally used? Can you picture your own routines, interests and relationships taking shape there?

Our latest blog looks beyond layouts and amenities to help you notice the details that reveal what everyday life in a community may really feel like.

🐦🌿 National Wildlife Day is a reminder that the natural world is part of everyday life at Friends House.

Across campus, residents help care for gardens and green spaces that support birds, pollinators and other local wildlife. It’s one more way life here stays connected to the beauty of Sandy Spring and the rhythms of the seasons.

Friends House is proud to have Garden Wildlife certification and a Wildr score of 92, reflecting ongoing stewardship of a campus that is shared with nature.

What wildlife have you spotted lately? 🦋

A welcoming new space for the people who make Friends House feel like home. ✂️🏡

Friends House recently marked the opening of our Employee Break Room, a comfortable place for team members to recharge, connect and take a well-deserved break during the day.

We are especially grateful to the donors whose generosity helped make this space possible. Your support is an investment in the team members who care for, support and serve our residents each day.

The ribbon-cutting brought together residents, volunteers and team members, including Phil Burkholder, CEO; Lucille, a resident and Friends of Health Care volunteer; Rick Key, Life Enrichment Director; Elizabeth Nicely, Director of Human Services; Christopher Trump, Director of Admissions; and Jason Rosewag, Director of Culinary Services.

Thank you to everyone who helped bring this project to life and create another meaningful way to support the Friends House team. 💚

A move to Friends House does not mean leaving an important member of the family behind.

As a pet-friendly community, Friends House welcomes dogs and the companionship, routine and joy they bring to everyday life. From greeting neighbors to settling in beside a favorite chair, pets quickly become part of the community too.

Today, we’re celebrating the four-legged friends who make everyday life a little warmer, brighter and more joyful. 🐾

Did you know Friends House has a resident-led Diversity Committee?

The committee creates opportunities for residents to learn from one another, share experiences and deepen their understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion. Through thoughtful discussion, educational programming and connections with the broader community, residents help strengthen a culture of respect and belonging.

It is one more example of how residents help shape life at Friends House, a community founded by Quakers and open to all.

There is always more to notice when you know what to look for.

Educational signage installed by the resident-led Friends House Environment Committee helps residents identify local bird species and learn more about the wildlife that shares the campus.

It is one more way the Wildlife Habitat invites observation, curiosity and a deeper understanding of the natural world just outside residents’ doors.

A full Miller Center and a lot of thoughtful conversation.

Friends House residents gathered last night for a Town Hall with Maryland District 14 representatives Senator Craig Zucker , Delegate Anne Kaiser , Delegate Bernice Mireku-North and Delegate Matt Post.

It was a great opportunity for residents to hear directly from their elected officials, ask questions and stay engaged with issues affecting the greater Sandy Spring and Olney community.

Thank you to our representatives for spending the evening with Friends House and to everyone who came ready to listen, ask questions and be part of the conversation.
