Where did the phrase “Rest in Peace” come from?

You’ve probably seen “R.I.P.” on a gravestone or heard the phrase “May they rest in peace.” But where did it begin?

The phrase comes from the Latin “Requiescat in pace,” meaning “May he or she rest in peace.”

The wording became associated with Christian prayers for the dead and appeared on European tombstones as early as the 8th century. Over time, it evolved into the familiar R.I.P. we recognize today.

Three little letters. Centuries of meaning. R.I.P.
