What makes holistic dentistry different?

For Dr. Zraiqat, holistic dentistry starts with one key idea: the mouth is connected to the rest of the body.

That means looking beyond a single tooth and considering how oral health, materials, inflammation, immune response, and each patient’s overall health may all play a role in care decisions.

It also means personalization. A dental material or treatment approach that works well for one person may not be the best fit for another — especially when factors like sensitivity, biocompatibility, detox pathways, or immune health are part of the picture.

Holistic dentistry isn’t about ignoring traditional dental care. It’s about widening the lens, asking better questions, and creating a plan that respects the whole person.

Did your gums change in your 40s or 50s — even though your brushing didn't?

You're not imagining it.

Research suggests the hormonal shifts of perimenopause and menopause are associated with changes in the gums and saliva, because estrogen affects the tissues in your mouth much like it does elsewhere in the body. That can show up as new sensitivity, bleeding, or dry mouth. The point isn't to brush harder — it's to understand what's changing so we can support your oral health through it. If your mouth has felt different lately, send us a message and we'll talk it through. (Educational only; individual experiences vary.) 🦷

Ever wish you could actually see what's going on in your mouth — instead of just taking our word for it? You can. With phase contrast microscopy, we take a quick, painless sample from along your gumline and show it live on a screen, so you watch your own oral bacteria in real time. A calm, quiet picture is a good sign. A busy one — lots of movement, spiral-shaped spirochetes, white blood cells — tells us something's worth paying attention to. It doesn't replace your regular exam, but it turns "you should floss more" into something you can see for yourself, and it lets us track your progress visit to visit. Curious what yours looks like? 🔬🦷

Ozone is simply a form of oxygen — O₃ instead of the O₂ we breathe. It has antimicrobial properties, which means it can help reduce bacteria. In our practice, we use it in a few specific ways as part of an overall treatment plan:

💧 As ozonated water during cleanings
🦷 As a gas during cavity preparation and treatment
🌿 In certain gum and root treatments, to help reduce bacteria

It's not a magic bullet, and it doesn't replace good dental care — it's one more tool that fits our metal-free, biocompatible, whole-body approach. We use it where it makes sense, as part of a bigger plan tailored to you.

Curious whether ozone fits into your care? We're always happy to talk it through.

That cloud you see when a drill hits an old silver filling? That's the part most people never think about.
A "silver" filling is about 50% mercury. While it sits intact in your tooth, it releases very little. But the moment it's drilled, the friction and heat throw off a spray of fine particles and v***r — and according to peer-reviewed research, that particulate can be an even greater source of mercury exposure when inhaled than the v***r itself.
That's why, in Dr. Z's view, the real question was never "should I remove my fillings?" It's "if I do, how is it being done?"
A protected removal is designed to catch that spray before it ever reaches you:
🦷 Rubber dam isolating the tooth
🦷 High-volume suction right at the source
🦷 Cool water to limit heat and v***r
🦷 Clean air to breathe + full protection for the team
Same procedure. Completely different exposure.
If you've got old amalgam fillings and you've never been shown how a safe removal actually works, that's worth a conversation — no pressure, just information.

🦷 Always get a second opinion.
A patient came to me after being told he needed a crown. He'd been seeing a dentist who kept finding "new" work every single visit — and something didn't add up.
So I took my own X-rays. The truth? The decay was small, nowhere near the nerve, and most of the tooth was completely healthy. A crown would've meant shaving down all that good structure. Instead, a simple filling saves around 70% of his tooth and gives it way more longevity.
Crowns are sometimes necessary — but only based on what's actually left after the decay is removed. Not by default.
Whether it's a dentist, a doctor, or a contractor: honesty is the most important thing you should be looking for. 🙏

🤍 If you're pregnant, nursing, or planning a family — this one's worth a save.
One of the questions we hear most from expecting and new moms is some version of: "Do my fillings matter for my baby?" It's a thoughtful question, and it deserves a thoughtful answer.

Here's what the research points to: the silver (amalgam) fillings many of us grew up with contain mercury, and studies have linked the number of a mother's amalgam fillings to mercury levels measured in cord blood, the placenta, and breast milk. Because babies and young children are small and still developing, this is a conversation many families want to have early.
This isn't a reason to panic — and importantly, removing healthy fillings isn't always recommended. It's simply a reason to be informed and to talk it through with a dentist who understands your goals. Mercury-free alternatives exist, and the right choice always depends on you and your situation.
If this is on your mind, you're not alone — and you don't have to figure it out by yourself. 🌿

👇 Expecting or planning? Save this for your next dental visit, or send it to a mom who'd want to see it.

Why drill more than necessary when the goal is to preserve what nature already built? 🦷✨

At Holistic Dental Arts, we take a conservative, whole-body approach to dentistry. Through biomimetic dentistry, we focus on preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible while restoring strength, function, and comfort.
When appropriate, we may also use dental ozone therapy to help reduce harmful bacteria and create a cleaner environment for the tooth.

The key is catching decay early. The earlier we identify the problem, the more options we may have to support the tooth and avoid more invasive treatment.
Your teeth are connected to your whole-body wellness — and they deserve precise, thoughtful care.

Most people call them “silver fillings”… but they aren’t just silver.

Dental amalgam is a mixture of metals that can include mercury, silver, tin, copper, and zinc. Over time, amalgam fillings may release small amounts of mercury v***r, especially with chewing, grinding, or when old fillings are removed.

At Holistic Dental Arts, we take a whole-body approach to dentistry by looking closely at the materials used in your mouth and how they may connect to your overall wellness.
Thinking about replacing old metal fillings? Don’t remove them casually — mercury-safe protocols matter.

Your implant isn't just replacing a tooth — it's becoming part of your body for decades.
So here's a question worth asking your dentist: what is it actually made of?
Titanium has been the standard for years, but research and patient experience are increasingly pointing to a quieter issue — corrosion over time, metal ion release, and reactivity in sensitive patients. Zirconia, a ceramic alternative, is fully biocompatible, metal-free, and tissue-friendly.
If you've ever felt uneasy about putting metal in your jaw long-term, you're not alone — and you have options. Curious whether zirconia is right for you? Send us a message or book a consultation.
