Rotator cuff injuries sometimes require Rotator Cuff Repair (RCR) surgery and can be treated through an open or arthroscopic approach with similar long-term results. There are some key differences between.
Open Surgery is a more traditional form of surgery that requires a large open incision often necessary if the rotator cuff tear is large or severe. With this type of surgery, a longer recovery and rehabilitation is required and why the arthroscopic approach is pursued first as long as optimal benefits can be reached.
Shoulder Arthroscopy consists of two to three small (around ¼” long) incisions made around the shoulder, allowing for the surgeon to insert a small camera (the arthroscope) and small tools to look around inside the shoulder. Almost all Rotator Cuff Repairs performed by Dr. Nathani are done so arthroscopically, which is much less invasive than traditional open surgery. Arthroscopy is popular for young and active patients who are hoping for a quicker return to sports and their active lifestyle. It is also a good option for elderly who have not found success with non-surgical treatments.
Schedule an appointment with Dr. Nathani to assess your specific injury and explore all of the treatment options and which one might be right for you.
