Santa Barbara Running and Racing and Elite Performance & Rehabilitation Center are Launching October’s Sneakers For Good Shoe Drive to Raise Money for the USC PT Elite Performance Scholarship Fund
Santa Barbara Running and Racing (SBRR) and Elite Performance & Rehabilitation Center (Elite Performance) are collecting gently worn, used and new athletic shoes throughout the month of October to raise funds for the USC Elite Performance Physical Therapy Scholarship Fund, which aims to increase diversity in the physical therapy profession by awarding annual scholarships to physical therapy students in USC’s Division of Kinesiology and Physical Therapy program. See ptforaccess.com for additional details. SBRR and Elite Performance’s Mike Swan, who established the scholarship fund in 2020, is continuing to raise funds towards a permanent endowment through this shoe drive and his annual Birthday Challenge donation drive, held in November.
SBRR and Elite Performance have partnered with Sneakers4Funds to provide runners a socially responsible way to donate their used sneakers and athletic shoes to a good cause. Athletes - It’s time to clean out your closet and garage! To participate, gather up all your gently worn, used and new athletic shoes. Donation boxes will be located throughout the month of October at both Elite Performance locations (Hollister Avenue and Gray Avenue), at Santa Barbara Running (Coast Village Road), and at The Lab (Gray Avenue). Donations may also be brought to SBRR group workouts on Saturdays and Tuesday evenings throughout the month of October.
The USC Elite Performance Physical Therapy Scholarship Fund will earn funds based on the total weight of sneakers and running shoes collected, then Sneakers4Funds will redistribute the shoes through the Sneakers For Good network of micro-enterprise (small business) partners. Sneakers4Funds works with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the athletic shoes collected in the Sneakers For Good program are used to feed, clothe and house their families. The athletic shoes are given a second life as well as kept out of landfills where they can take decades to fully decompose. See sneakers4funds.com and funds2orgs.com for additional details.
“We are excited about recycling running shoes," said Mike Swan. "We know that runners tend to collect a lot of shoes and most people have extra pairs in their closets they no longer want or use. By collecting these shoes, we raise money for a good cause, keep the shoes out of the landfills, and have the chance to help families in developing nations who need economic opportunities. It's a win-win for everyone.”
Thank you for your support and participation!
