A herniated disc can be more than just back pain. Numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain that travels can all be signs of nerve irritation.

The good news is that surgery isn’t always the first or only option. Minimally invasive treatments may help reduce pain and get you back to moving comfortably.

Your MRI came back normal, but your back still hurts. Now what?

Not every source of back pain shows up clearly on imaging. Facet joint or sacroiliac joint inflammation can sometimes cause significant pain even when an MRI doesn’t reveal an obvious problem.

That’s where a thorough physical exam and, when appropriate, diagnostic injections can help identify where the pain is actually coming from.

A “normal” MRI doesn’t always mean there’s nothing left to investigate.

Back surgery isn’t always the only next step.

If conservative treatments haven’t given you enough relief, interventional pain management may offer other options before considering surgery. From epidural injections and radiofrequency ablation to procedures like Intracept, the right treatment depends on where your pain is coming from and what’s causing it.

The goal is simple: reduce pain, restore function, and help you get back to the things you love.

My pain management hot take: “natural” doesn’t automatically mean safe or effective.

There are countless supplements marketed for pain and inflammation, but what’s on the label doesn’t always tell the whole story.

Before adding something to your routine, know what you’re taking, understand the potential risks and talk to a qualified medical professional, especially if you’re taking other medications.

Pain relief shouldn’t come at the expense of your overall health.

One of the most common concerns I hear from patients is that their epidural caused their long-term back pain.

But the timing can be misleading.

During labor, an epidural reduces sensation while the body is undergoing significant physical stress. Once that numbness wears off, back pain may become noticeable, leading people to associate the two.

In many cases, it’s the physical demands of pregnancy, labor and delivery that are contributing to the pain, not the epidural itself.

If you’re experiencing persistent back pain after pregnancy, it’s worth evaluating what’s actually causing it.

Back pain that travels below your knee? Don’t ignore it!

Pain that shoots down the leg, especially with burning, numbness, or tingling, can be a sign that a nerve in your lower back is being irritated or compressed, sometimes from a herniated disc.

Treatment usually starts conservatively with things like physical therapy and anti inflammatory medication. Depending on your symptoms and exam, imaging such as an MRI may also be appropriate.

If the pain persists, an epidural steroid injection may be considered to target inflammation around the irritated nerve.

Radiating pain isn’t just “regular” back pain. Get it evaluated.

Two everyday habits I see contributing to back pain all the time: sitting for hours and wearing high heels.

If you’re at a desk all day, try alternating between sitting and standing or simply getting up and moving regularly.

And when it comes to shoes, I’m a big fan of keeping them flat or sticking with only a slight elevation.

Sometimes helping your back starts with changing the things you do every day.
