A stranger said two sentences to me and it took me two days to get over it.
I was in college, working at a doctor’s office, helping with collections. A patient came through to check out, I told him what he owed, and he argued. Then he looked me straight in the face and said: you give a lot of bad vibes out. I’m feeling a lot of bad vibes about you.
That was the whole thing.
And maybe I do. I honestly do not know. But it took me almost forty eight hours to come back from two sentences, said by a man I would never see again, in a two minute conversation about a bill.
Not because I am thin skinned. Not because I cannot take criticism. Because of what happens afterwards. It replays. It gets turned over and examined. It lands in your body, and for me that is the solar plexus, and it stays there.
Some people call it rejection sensitive dysphoria. Some call it RSD. Whatever you call it, here is the part most ADHDers already know and almost nobody says out loud. It does not require anyone to be cruel. He was not being cruel. He was being blunt with a kid asking him for money. The gap between what was said and what it cost is the whole thing.
What is yours? The sentence you are still carrying, from someone who has almost certainly forgotten saying it.
