Two-Spirit is a sacred term rooted in Indigenous traditions, one that long predates Western binary concepts of gender and sexuality. Two-Spirit people have held honored roles in many Indigenous communities for centuries as healers, leaders, teachers, and ceremonial guides. Colonization attempted to erase this. It did not succeed.

As a trauma-informed therapist working with LGBTQ2S+ individuals I am reminded regularly that healing is not new. Resistance is not new. The fullness of human identity beyond the boxes Western culture created is not new.

Two-Spirit people are decolonizing, healing, resisting, creating, and being, exactly as their communities have always known them to be.
