New Mexico health officials are warning residents to watch for heat illness this week as temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees across much of New Mexico – dangerously early in the season, before most residents have acclimated to the heat or set up home cooling systems.

Last summer there were 761 heat-related emergency department visits around the state.

Heat illness can progress very quickly. Seek medical attention if you experience a fever or chills, nausea or vomiting, or confusion from the heat.

Los funcionarios de salud de Nuevo México advierten a los residentes que estén atentos a las enfermedades relacionadas con el calor esta semana, ya que se prevé que las temperaturas superen los 100 grados en gran parte del estado. Estas temperaturas extremas están llegando peligrosamente temprano en la temporada, antes de que la mayoría de los residentes se hayan adaptado al calor o hayan puesto en funcionamiento sus sistemas de refrigeración.

El verano pasado se registraron 761 visitas a salas de emergencia relacionadas con enfermedades causadas por el calor en todo el estado. Las enfermedades relacionadas con el calor pueden agravarse rápidamente. Busque atención médica si presenta fiebre o escalofríos, náuseas o vómitos, o confusión causada por la exposición al calor.

Join the New Mexico Department of Health for a FREE virtual Overdose Recognition & Response Training on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.

From 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m., community members will learn how to recognize the signs of an overdose, respond safely, administer nasal naloxone in an emergency, and understand how overdoses happen.

Participants who complete the training will receive a naloxone kit by mail. Spanish interpretation will also be available.

Breastfeeding can support the health and well-being of infants and mothers. NM WIC offers free breastfeeding support through peer counselors, lactation specialists, nutrition education and personalized guidance.

This year’s theme, “Protect Breastfeeding: Discover Your WIC Network,” encourages families to connect with their local WIC office for support, tools and community resources.

La lactancia materna puede favorecer la salud y el bienestar de los bebés y las madres. NM WIC ofrece apoyo gratuito para la lactancia materna a través de consejeras pares, especialistas en lactancia, educación nutricional y orientación personalizada.

Free rapid testing for HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis will be available Aug. 11 at the Bloomfield Public Health Office. Testing takes about 20 minutes and is provided by the New Mexico Department of Health and First Nations Community HealthSource.

Additional resources will include naloxone distribution, safer s*x supplies, overdose prevention materials and harm reduction services. Attendees who get tested will receive a $20 Walmart gift card!

August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day. A universal day to honor those we've lost to overdose, educate on stigma, and support communities.

NMDOH will be hosting a FREE in person & virtual Overdose Response & Rescue Training on August 31st. Learn how to recognize an overdose, respond safely, and save a life.

From 11:30 a.m. - 1:20 p.m. at the Harold Runnels Building in Santa Fe, this training will feature a guest speaker, statewide moment of silence, Overdose Recognition Training and a Q and A. At the end of the training, participants will be given or mailed a naloxone kit.
