🧠💪 Can pushing yourself physically also be connected to how you handle emotions?

I was pleased to be interviewed and quoted in a new Women's Health article exploring a fascinating study that found an association between vigorous exercise and higher self-reported emotional intelligence among women.

While the research does not show that harder workouts cause greater emotional intelligence, it raises an interesting question about the connection between physical activity, resilience and emotional well-being.

As I shared with Women’s Health, people with higher emotional intelligence may be more in tune with the fact that what we put into an exercise routine can influence what we get out of it. Emotional intelligence may also help us navigate stress and challenges—important skills both inside and outside the gym.

And one message I always come back to: we all have the capacity to push ourselves and pursue greater success. 💪

I was recently quoted in Healthline discussing BPC-157, the so-called “Wolverine” peptide that has gained significant attention among athletes, fitness enthusiasts and people looking for faster recovery from pain and injury.

The problem is that the hype has moved far ahead of the science.

At this point, we simply do not have sufficient human evidence showing that BPC-157 is effective for pain relief or clinical healing—and we still don’t fully understand its safety profile.

When it comes to recovery and longevity, I believe we should be asking a simple question: What does the science actually tell us?

There are evidence-based approaches to musculoskeletal health and recovery that have been studied for years, including orthobiologics such as PRP, bone marrow aspirate and other regenerative strategies.

Innovation is exciting. But innovation without evidence can put patients at risk.

I appreciate Healthline for giving me the opportunity to discuss what we know—and, just as importantly, what we don’t know—about BPC-157.

Proponents of BPC-157, the “Wolverine” peptide, tout injury recovery and pain relief despite limited human evidence to establish safety and effectiveness. Until the potential for adverse reactions is better understood, experts advise against unapproved peptides.

Excited to share my recent conversation on the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's Easy Reider Podcast with Dr. Bruce Reider.

In this episode, we dive into my journey in sports medicine — from early research in MRI and ACL injury prevention to working with World Cup athletes and developing programs like PEP (Prevent Injury, Enhance Performance).

We also explore how innovation, teamwork, and a focus on extending an athlete’s “playspan” continue to shape the future of care—whether you're an elite competitor or simply striving to stay active and healthy.

Grateful for the opportunity to reflect on this journey and share insights with the sports medicine community.

🍂 Protect Your Joints as the Seasons Change

Seasonal transitions often bring changes in temperature, activity levels, and daily routines. Whether you’re getting back to outdoor exercise, tackling yard work, or simply becoming more active, your joints may need a little extra attention.

Protecting your joints during seasonal transitions isn't just about avoiding pain, it is an active investment in your long-term health span.”

Taking care of your joints today can help you stay mobile, active, and independent for years to come.

Consider starting gradually, warming up before activity, incorporating strength and flexibility exercises, and paying attention to persistent pain or discomfort rather than pushing through it.

Healthy joints aren't just about feeling good today—they're about preserving your ability to move well tomorrow.

I’m honored to share that I have been named Chief Medical Officer of U.S. Soccer.

U.S. Soccer has been an important part of my life for more than three decades. Since 1989, I’ve had the privilege of working with the USA Soccer Men's National Team at nine FIFA World Cups, as well as six Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Now, I’m excited to help lead U.S. Soccer’s medical strategy and continue working with an outstanding network of physicians and healthcare professionals to advance athlete health, injury prevention, recovery, performance and long-term wellness.

For me, sports medicine has always been about more than treating an injury. It’s about building capacity and resilience so athletes can perform at their best today while preserving their ability to participate in the activities they love for years to come. I call this approach “play span.”

Ultimately, the impact of this work should extend beyond wins and championships. It should help create healthier athletes, stronger communities and better models of care that can benefit people at every level of sport.

I’m grateful for the trust U.S. Soccer has placed in me and excited for what we can accomplish together.

🧠 Could mental fitness be one of the most overlooked pillars of longevity?

When we think about living longer and healthier, we often focus on exercise, nutrition, sleep and cardiovascular health. But there’s another important piece of the puzzle: our minds.

As an orthopedic surgeon, I’ve seen how much mindset can influence recovery, performance and our ability to stay active. Resilience, purpose, adaptability and staying mentally engaged may be just as important to healthy aging as what we do physically.

Longevity isn’t simply about adding more years to our lives -- it’s about preserving our healthspan, independence and ability to continue doing the things we love.

In my latest blog, I explore the connection between mental fitness, resilience and healthy aging, and why training your mind may deserve a place alongside training your body.

Your mindset is more powerful than you think 🧠💪

Psychological resilience doesn’t just help you “cope”—it actually acts as a physical buffer for your body.

Research consistently shows that individuals with higher levels of optimism and goal-directed focus have:
✔️ Lower levels of systemic inflammation
✔️ Better heart rate variability (HRV)
✔️ Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease
✔️ Lower likelihood of cognitive decline

In other words, optimism isn’t just a feeling—it creates a biochemical environment that supports cellular repair, recovery, and long-term health.

Training your mind is just as important as training your body.

Stay focused. Stay resilient. Stay strong.
