He had a coronary calcium score of ZERO — and still had a heart attack. 👇
I’ve seen it over and over, and it’s more common than anyone tells you. Here’s why it happens:
A calcium score only sees plaque that’s already hardened. But the plaque that actually ruptures and causes a heart attack is soft plaque — unstable, dangerous, and invisible on a calcium scan.
So a score of zero doesn’t mean you’re clear. It just means the plaque hasn’t calcified yet.
Here’s what we look at instead:
🫀 A CT coronary angiogram — an advanced, non-invasive heart scan that uses AI to map your arteries in detail and actually spot the soft plaque a calcium score misses.
Plus 4 blood markers most standard panels skip:
🔴 ApoB — the number of plaque-forming particles; a far better predictor than LDL alone.
🧬 Lp(a) — a genetic risk factor affecting 1 in 5 people that almost nobody gets tested for.
🔥 hs-CRP — inflammation, where soft plaque rupture begins.
⚠️ Lp-PLA2 — flags the unstable plaque most likely to break off.
None of this is experimental — these are evidence-based markers that just aren’t on a standard panel.
So if you’ve got a “zero” calcium score but a high ApoB or elevated Lp(a), soft plaque may be building silently right now. A clean calcium scan is not the same as a healthy heart.

Two people with diabetes can feel completely different and both be in trouble. One is shaky and sweating. The other is thirsty and exhausted.

Your brain runs almost entirely on glucose and cannot store any, so it depends on a steady supply arriving in your blood. When blood sugar drops too low, your brain has minutes of fuel left. Your body releases adrenaline to force sugar back into circulation, and that is the shaking, the sweating and the racing heart. Ignored, it becomes confusion, slurred speech and loss of consciousness.

When blood sugar runs too high, your kidneys spill the excess into your urine and water follows it out. That is the constant thirst, the frequent urination, the fatigue and the blurred vision, and it builds over hours and days rather than minutes. 🧠⚡

If you recognise low blood sugar in yourself, treat it straight away with fast-acting sugar such as juice or glucose tablets. If someone is confused, cannot swallow, or is unconscious, do not put anything in their mouth. Call emergency services immediately. Very high blood sugar can also become an emergency, so persistent vomiting, deep rapid breathing or drowsiness needs urgent care rather than waiting it out.

A blocked artery can dramatically reduce blood flow and put the heart at risk. During a stent procedure, a tiny balloon expands inside the narrowed artery, pushing plaque outward and reopening the passage. A metal stent then stays in place to help keep the artery open and restore healthy blood flow.

Atherosclerosis: The Silent Buildup Inside Your Arteries

Atherosclerosis develops when cholesterol-rich particles, especially LDL, enter the artery wall and trigger inflammation, gradually forming fatty plaques that narrow and stiffen arteries and reduce blood flow. Plaques can also suddenly rupture, causing a blood clot that may completely block an artery and lead to a heart attack or stroke. Depending on the arteries affected, atherosclerosis can also cause peripheral artery disease, kidney disease, erectile dysfunction, or intestinal ischemia. Prevention and treatment focus on not smoking, regular exercise, a heart-healthy diet, controlling blood pressure and diabetes, and lowering LDL cholesterol when indicated.

Heart failure doesn’t mean the heart stops beating—it means the heart can no longer pump blood efficiently enough to meet the body’s needs. This can lead to fluid buildup, shortness of breath, swelling, and fatigue over time.

A GREAT explanation by Explainique

LDL and HDL are both types of cholesterol—but they play very different roles in your body.

LDL (low-density lipoprotein) carries cholesterol from the liver to your tissues. When LDL levels become too high, cholesterol can build up inside your arteries, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

HDL (high-density lipoprotein) works in the opposite direction. It helps collect excess cholesterol from your bloodstream and artery walls, carrying it back to the liver where it can be removed from the body.

That’s why LDL is often called the “bad” cholesterol, while HDL is known as the “good” cholesterol.

Simple idea: LDL delivers cholesterol and can contribute to plaque buildup, while HDL helps remove excess cholesterol to support heart health.

🖤 Fund the work that saves lives.

This is where it leads.

When overlooked and ignored research is finally supported,
it becomes something else entirely:
Life-saving.

BioShift Research Foundation exists to move critical science forward-faster, and where it matters most.

Because the right research, funded at the right time,
changes everything!

🖤 What’s overlooked isn’t unimportant.

Breakthroughs don’t disappear.
They get overlooked.

Entire areas of research remain underfunded—
not because they lack potential, but because they lack attention.

At BioShift Research Foundation, we fund what others won’t.
Because overlooked science doesn’t stay theoretical.
It becomes overlooked outcomes.
