Jujube tea - the Sanhu House way 🍵
It’s one of the many warming teas, broths, and meals we can prepare for our postpartum moms as part of our sanhujori practice - the traditional Korean method of deep recovery after birth. Red dates simmered slow with cinnamon, until the color deepens and it turns naturally sweet and warming.

These small, consistent rituals are what recovery is built on. It’s a simple, comforting way to support healing in the weeks after birth.

Save this one. Make it for a mom who needs a little healing hug this week. 🤍

Accessibility to postpartum support has always been at the heart of what we do.

So we are making a change. Doula care is now $65/hour, flat. No minimums, no overnight upcharge. Every doula is still Sanhujori trained, belly binding included.

We believe mother-centered care is what makes recovery possible. If you know a family who’s been waiting for the right time, we’d love to care for them. Link in bio.

This week marks 15 years of National Black Breastfeeding Week and the numbers tell a clear story. 73.6% of Black moms initiate breastfeeding compared to 84.1% nationally, and Black infants face a mortality rate roughly double that of white infants. This isn’t about willingness - it’s about access. Black moms are less likely to be offered lactation support in the hospital, more likely to be offered formula first, and often lack representation among the providers meant to help them.
This week exists to close that gap - through community, culturally-responsive care, and Black-led lactation support.

Matresence isn’t just hormones. It’s losing your place in your old friend group. It’s not recognizing the relationship you had with your partner before baby. It’s every part of you shifting at once, physically, relationally, socially, and no one warning you it would feel like this.

Dana, our Head of Maternal Care, on why this transition deserves real support, not just “bounce back” advice.

This is the recovery we built Sanhu House around.

August is National Breastfeeding Month. Swipe for the science and the stats that you should know.

Many of us on the Sanhu House team are moms and have navigated the latch struggles, supply worries, 3am clusterfeeds, and the emotional pressure. We know how hard it can be and how different that looks for every single person.

At Sanhu House, we will always support every mom’s decision to feed her baby in the way that works best for her - whether that’s breastfeeding, formula, combo feeding, or exclusive pumping. 🤍

Being awake for 17-19 hours is like being legally drunk. After that long without sleep, your cognitive performance drops to the equivalent of a 0.05% blood alcohol level. Reaction times up to 50% slower. After 24 hours, you’re above the legal driving limit.

The first weeks of motherhood typically come with fragmented sleep, crashing hormones, and a body still recovering.

Sleep deprivation this severe is linked to postnatal depression, emotional dysregulation, and slower physical recovery. It’s not “just tiredness.” It’s a medical reality that deserves real support.

That’s exactly what doula care is for. A trained doula arrives at your home, takes the baby, and lets you sleep in stretches that actually restore you. Not a luxury - one of the most evidence-backed things you can do for your recovery.

An accountable village isn’t built in a week. It’s built in the people who check in, listen, and continue showing up long after the baby arrives.

This Black Maternal Mental Health Week (July 19-25), we’re recognizing that support matters. While 1 in 5 new mothers experience a maternal mental health condition, that number rises to nearly 40% for Black mothers - yet they’re treated at half the rate.

This gap isn’t about asking for help. It’s about access: fewer screenings, fewer culturally responsive providers, and too many women being dismissed when they say, “I’m not okay.”

At Sanhu House, our doulas support more than your physical recovery. If something feels heavier than it should, we’ll help connect you with culturally responsive care.

Here’s the truth: while 1 in 5 new moms experience a maternal mental health condition, that number rises to nearly 40% for Black mothers - yet they’re treated at just half the rate.

For Black Maternal Mental Health Week, one of our doulas reminds us that behind these statistics are real mothers who deserve to feel heard, supported, and cared for throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

This year’s theme, “Building an Accountable Village,” is a call to create support systems that last long after the awareness week ends. For Black mothers, that means having people in your corner, staying informed about your health and rights, speaking up during medical appointments, and prioritizing your mental wellbeing.

At Sanhu House, we believe postpartum care goes beyond physical recovery. Our doulas are there to listen, advocate, and help families access culturally responsive support when they need it most.

📞 Call us to build a postpartum plan that cares for your mind, too.
