What Is Resentment?

Resentment is often a signal that something inside you needs attention.

🌿 Resentment isn’t a bad part.
It’s often trying to tell you:
“I’ve been giving too much.”
“My needs aren’t being met.”
“My boundaries have been crossed.”

🦋 Resentment often grows in people who…
• Repeatedly put other people’s needs before their own.
• Have difficulty saying no.
• Feel responsible for everyone else’s emotions.
• Ignore their own needs to keep the peace.
• Feel unseen, unappreciated, or taken for granted.

☀️ Resentment is information.
Instead of asking,
“Why am I so resentful?”

Try asking:
• What boundary needs my attention?
• What need have I been ignoring?
• What have I been carrying that isn’t mine?

🌼 Healing resentment doesn’t mean becoming less caring.

It means learning to care for yourself with the same compassion you’ve always offered everyone else.

Sometimes resentment softens when your boundaries become stronger.

You matter. Your needs matter. Your boundaries matter.

You don’t have to look anxious to be struggling with anxiety.

Most of the women I work with are high-functioning. They show up for everyone else, excel at work, and look like they have it all together. But underneath, they’re overthinking every conversation, replaying what they said, people-pleasing, striving for perfection, and carrying a harsh inner voice that tells them they’re not doing enough.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

Hi, I’m Laura. I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist specializing in trauma, anxiety, and relationship patterns. I help women, teens, and young adults understand where these patterns came from so they can stop feeling stuck and start feeling more like themselves.

My approach combines Internal Family Systems (IFS) and DBT because I believe healing isn’t just about learning coping skills…it’s about understanding yourself with compassion while building practical tools that actually work in everyday life.

Therapy with me is warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental. Whether you’re healing from childhood emotional neglect, relationship trauma, anxiety, or simply feeling exhausted from carrying so much on your own, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

I’m so glad you’re here. I hope this page becomes a place where you feel understood, learn something new, and are reminded that healing is possible. 🤍

✨ Currently accepting new clients in California.

If you have a caretaker part, I want you to know something.

This part is beautiful.

We don’t want to get rid of it. We don’t want to change who you are.

This part likely learned that helping, fixing, and caring for others was the safest way to find love, connection, or belonging.

But when you’re constantly taking care of everyone else, you can lose connection with yourself.

Over time, chronic caretaking and people pleasing can contribute to stress, burnout, resentment, and even physical consequences in the body.

Healing isn’t about caring less.

It’s about learning that you matter too.

You can support others without carrying them.

You can love people without abandoning yourself.

If you resonated with any of these signs, you may have a caretaker part. 🌿

A caretaker part is often closely connected to people pleasing and fixing parts. It may feel responsible for other people’s emotions, problems, comfort, or well-being. It often believes that if everyone else is okay, then it can finally relax.

From an Internal Family Systems perspective, this part is usually trying to protect something deeper. Often, it learned very early in life that being helpful, responsible, easygoing, or emotionally attuned was necessary for survival, connection, love, acceptance, or safety.

This part isn’t trying to create exhaustion or burnout. It’s trying to help.

The challenge is that over time, the caretaker part can begin carrying things that were never meant to be carried. It may become responsible for managing other people’s feelings, solving problems that aren’t yours to solve, or putting everyone else’s needs ahead of your own.

When this happens, you may find yourself feeling resentful, overwhelmed, emotionally drained, or disconnected from your own needs.

Healing doesn’t mean becoming less caring.

It means helping your caretaker part learn that your worth is not determined by how much you do for others. It means learning that you can be loving without fixing, supportive without rescuing, and connected without abandoning yourself.

What’s one sign that your caretaker part might be activated? 🌿⬇️

What people pleasers need most isn’t to be nicer. It isn’t to do more. Most people pleasers need boundaries. People pleasing is often a protective part that fears rejection, conflict, or abandonment. Boundaries teach that part something new: I can be loved, connected, and accepted without abandoning myself- have you take inventory on what boundaries may be porous, healthy or rigid ? Let me know in the comments.

Here is some psychoeducation on what it looks like to have a people pleasing part 🤍

People pleasing often includes abandoning your own needs, feelings, or truth for the comfort or happiness of someone else.

It can look like:
• Saying “yes” when you really want to say “no”
• Feeling anxious about disappointing people
• Avoiding conflict at all costs
• Over explaining yourself so others won’t be upset
• Feeling responsible for everyone else’s emotions
• Staying quiet instead of expressing your truth
• Shrinking yourself to feel accepted, safe, or loved
• Ignoring your own exhaustion while constantly showing up for others
• Struggling with guilt when setting boundaries
• Feeling afraid that being fully yourself could lead to rejection

People pleasing is not just a personality trait. It is often a nervous system response developed from past experiences where staying small, helpful, agreeable, or hyper aware of others felt safer.

Over time, constantly abandoning yourself can lead to resentment, burnout, anxiety, emotional disconnection, and even physical symptoms in the body.

Healing doesn’t mean becoming selfish.
It means learning that your needs matter too. 🌿

What’s one way people pleasing has shown up in your life? ⬇️

If you have people-pleasing parts, saying “no” probably doesn’t feel neutral… it feels wrong.

Not because it is wrong, but because your nervous system learned that:
“No = conflict”
“No = rejection”
“No = I’m a bad person”

So of course a part of you says yes when you don’t want to.
That part is trying to protect you.

But here’s the truth:
Every time you say yes when you mean no, you reinforce the belief that your needs don’t matter.

However every time you practice a safe, grounded no…
you start rewiring that belief.

Not overnight.
But slowly, consistently, and with a lot of compassion for the parts of you that are scared.

You don’t have to become someone else.
You just have to learn how to stay connected to yourself.
