Know your rights as a breastfeeding momma!
This is why we push back when breastfeeding moms are told to cover up, go somewhere else, or leave altogether.
Because when a mother knows she doesn’t have to be ashamed or intimidated, she can stand her ground.
And sometimes, the education and advocacy we put out into the world reaches a mom at exactly the moment she needs it.
“At the pool today with my family. And I got out with my 15 month old for a quick snack and break from the sun. Some lady walks over to me and tells me I should cover up because there are families here... yeah I know, mine is one of them.
I told her it's 110° today in Texas and I'm not covering my child's face. Besides, he hates being covered and it actually makes feedings way more noticeable.
And I added that there is a lady wearing a bathing suit which I'm assuming is made out of dental floss because I can see both butt cheeks as well as the majority of her b***s... and to me that is way less family friendly than me nursing my child.
She tried to say if I didn't cover up I'd have to leave. I told her she would have to call the police and I know the state laws and I am protected.
She turned and went back to her table and has been rolling her eyes at me for 20 minutes... but thanks to this page I knew my rights and not to be bullied by some rude lady.
So thanks mamas!!! Thanks to Breastfeeding Mama Talk I knew just what to do!”
THIS.
This is why Breastfeeding Mama Talk has never just been about pretty breastfeeding photos or telling moms “you got this.”
It has always been about making sure mothers know they are allowed to take up space.
To feed their babies.
To use their voices.
And to know when somebody else's discomfort does not require their obedience.
Stories like this are why, all these years later, I still believe this work matters. ❤️
