“Why do we allow the shadows of our long ago to darken our today?”
In recovery, this question invites us to examine how often we continue to live under the influence of old wounds, old mistakes, old regrets, and old stories about ourselves.
Many of us spent years carrying shame from our past. We replay conversations we wish we could change, decisions we wish we had never made, and consequences we wish we could erase. But recovery teaches us that while we cannot rewrite yesterday, we do have a choice about how much power we give it today.
The shadows of our past only remain dark when we continue to stand in them.
Healing begins when we acknowledge our history without allowing it to define our future. The lessons of yesterday can guide us, but they were never meant to imprison us. Recovery is about stepping into the light of today—one day, one choice, one moment at a time.
Your past may explain you, but it does not have to control you.
Today is a gift. Don’t allow old shadows to steal today’s sunshine.
Reflection Question:
What part of your past are you still allowing to darken your present, and what would it look like to step into the light today?
❤️ Recovery reminds us that we are not who we were—we are who we are becoming.
