Finally, someone is trying to make motherhood in medicine better.
Medical and surgical residency training commonly coincides with the ages (26-36) women would want to start their families. Many women wait to start their families, then deal with infertility later, others forge ahead.
Physicians in training already have high rates of burnout. Add to that the stress, sleep deprivation, and increased demands of caregiving for an infant: the risk of burnout increases dramatically. It’s really sad to see doctor burned out before their professional career has even begun.
This study shows that with some support and a couple of time saving supplies, perinatal residents can have significantly decreased rates of burnout. Less burnout means happier moms, happier families, and becoming better doctors.
Please share this study with residency faculty members of ALL fields. The new generation of doctors deserve our support. And it’s evidenced based… can’t argue with that.
