When your child dies before you it feels like the whole universe is upside down.

Because you are so attached to them in heart and body, it feels like there is no order anymore, and if there isn’t enough support for you, you can really feel like you are on the outside of the movements and rhythm of the entire cosmos.

This isn’t because you don’t deserve a place here anymore.

When it comes to big sorrow our culture really doesn’t have the elders, ground and practices that we know in our bones, to lean on when we go through such a big loss.

We don’t keen together. We don’t have a tradition of deep support of community through loss. We don’t have substantial rituals that guides the sorrow as a community.

If you had these things, you might know that it is not that you are outcast and floating,
But that your heart is broken and that you need support and guidance through a time of the explosion of your world.

You still belong here. You still belong to the trees and the ocean, to the moon at night and the sun in the day. To your circle of friends, and family.

May you feel the connection, care and help that you absolutely deserve through this time.

When someone says “Have faith” when you’re pregnant after a loss,
(I know they absolutely mean well)
But it can feel impossible after walking through the shock and deep sorrow of pregnancy, infant and toddler loss.

You are not weak for feeling deeply anxious.

I encourage my clients to invite their worry right in, and let it sit next to them.

I invite them to invite their sorrow, their anger, their love and their hope, to all be there together.

We can only go one slow step at a time. And I KNOW this is such a slow process.

One step, one breath at a time, we welcome all of these real and important feelings and insights.

One step, one breath at a time, we make it through today.

We savor what we can, we feel what is there. We make no guarantees. And we make room for a little bit of that part that can imagine how real it is that babies do survive, and births can go well. Even if you can hold that for 3 seconds, you’re building a place of possibility.

Anniversaries carry weight

They bring us physically back to the waters of grief and the heaviness, the love, the missing.

You deserve support for this time, so you can be with it, be present with it.

These days of return have so much importance and help us understand what we have walked through and how we want to carry this forward.

I wrote a blog about this and you can read it on my site, the link is in the bio.

I wish you space, love, permission to be slow on these days.

Anniversaries of the loss of your baby are hard. And they are important.
May you feel space to be slower and sadder than usual.
May you take the time to tend to this experience that has shaped you and your heart. May you ask for help. And may you feel honored for the strength of your love for this child. I’m tiring a blog post that will be posted soon on this topic.

If you know me
Chances are we’ve talked about the Sylkie myth.

The soul-depth of the sea.

The importance of returning again and again to the cool, deep waters of our inner and outer spaces.

To breathe. To feel small among the grand ancient movements. To pay homage to home.

As mamas and women, we NEED this. As mamas and parents who live a child who has passed beyond, it is essential.

Time to watch the waves and be shifted by the long movements, the sounds. The swooping flight of pelicans. The calls of gulls.

I got to soak up the beauty of the ocean on this big day, of turning 50. I get to be with all that is in my heart. I talk to my son. I think about my living kids and the ever changing coarse of life.

I feel the ache of it all, the beauty, the sorrow. And I write.

This is me getting into my seal skin and going home to my wild self, listening to all of her colors and songs. Any mama who has lost a pregnancy or child needs space and time to return to all of these places, touch them, know how they continue to shape our deep places, our hearts.

I celebrate this big moment of turning 50, I hold close all the twists and turns of life and return home to family and community I’m so grateful to be a part of.

I draw on these three areas of wisdom and technique when I work with parents going through pregnancy loss and infant loss.

Depth Work
Honoring the soul’s path through grief, transformation, and the wisdom that emerges when we turn toward what hurts.

Ecotherapy/Reverence for Nature
Finding belonging in the rhythms of the natural world, where loss, beauty, decay, and renewal are all part of the same living story. Even in profound sorrow, we belong to something larger that continues to hold us.

Trauma Processing/Brainspotting
A focused, brain-based trauma therapy that follows the nervous system’s own wisdom, supporting the release of trauma held beyond words.

The soul has wisdom.
Nature has wisdom.
The nervous system has wisdom.

These rivers of wisdom converge in a sweet spot that is such a tender and rich place to walk with my clients, each of them so unique in their needs and their experience. We find this unique path together.

The most simple and powerful thing I can do to help parents as they grieve is to be with them in their sorrow.

Not to try to make them feel better or think about the future.

But to name with them, the void, the despair, the ache, the love.

When we do this, we open the door for tears, for memories, for sweetness to come in.

But first we truly honor the sorrow and how massive it is.

To be able to speak this and have it be held, allows the heart to feel, and to feel with presence, with acceptance.

The most simple things are often the most profound.

It is an honor to walk this journey with parents, to honor the tremendous love they have.

There is no sorrow without love.

I am creating an online grief-tending group to create a space for this love and sorrow to take root in community, to be witnessed, understood and create new wisdom around this place, together.

Reach out if this speaks to you.

We get to keep loving them.
We don’t have to put the pictures away

We don’t have to move on

We keep growing in our own hearts, with them.

How do we do this?

We find out one day at a time, one step at a time.

We keep our hearts open

We keep our grief warm.

Now research shows that an ongoing inner relationship with our loved ones who have died is beneficial to us.

Which has always seemed so true to me.

Now we get to hold it even in western thought.

When we carry an unbearable loss, being in nature, a meadow, trees, waters, can help us with each step. Without words of wisdom, without advice, the bigger picture of who we are and where we come from can come forward. We feel through our feet, through the earth, the ancient turning of days, of seasons, we feel the layers of time and ancestors, we hear the song of the living birds and breeze, not to cheer us up but to BE with what is. I personally love to walk with my grief, to touch the grasses and be in this place of such deep understanding of all the aspects of life, all the iterations of heart and being. When our lives blast apart, there are still the hills. Not everyone feels the comfort of the outside. Some may find it quietly at home, staring at a fire or at the way the light moves on the wall. Wherever we find our time to be held and be with our hearts in loss, it is so important that we allow it, that we make room for this. It allows the alchemy to what we carry to slowly slowly move. It allows us to be with the ache of our bodies, with the longing for the child we love and miss, to be full and real there.
