According to the CDC, more than 49,000 people died by su***de in 2023.
Su***de is the second leading cause of death for people ages 10-34.
LBGTQ+, Males, Teens, Veterans, and First Responders are at a significantly higher risk for su***de. Rural Communities, Limited Mental Health Services, Stigma, Trauma, and financial instability increase this risk. Many Sonoma County Residents have these compounded risks, and we need more resources.
I was once told from a supervisor that Sonoma County itself has a higher number of individuals seeking mental health support then Oakland, though the numbers of residents in Oakland is extremely higher then Sonoma County. I don't know those numbers, and I will not pretend to know. But what I do know is our communities in Sonoma County are in dire need of mental health supports, especially our LGBTQ+ communities, our first responders, and those that have been impacted by the many natural distasters our community has endured.
Thank you to the Zane Templin Foundation for the work you do for our community to prevent su***de and create support for those in need. Thank you to each and every person that donated and celebrated with last night. We at EmbodiedSelf Therapy are proud to be of service. And, it takes a community. We all need to contribute in whatever way possible.
Everyone can help prevent su***de by learning the warning signs, promoting prevention and resilience, and committing to social change. Watch for the signs of increased su***de risk, such as isolation, loss, mental illness, and substance use. Act with these five steps to help save the life of someone who may be suicidal: Ask, Be There, Keep Them Safe, Help Them Connect, and Follow Up.
For those that are unaware, 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline is now a national number. Any mental health need is welcome to call.
