I have 14 years law enforcement experience with 7 years as an Area Commander for the Department of Homeland Security in Oakland, CA. I managed security and law enforcement functions for over 100 federal facilities including 4 large federal buildings, which included over 4000 federal employees and visitors. In 2007, I decided to leave the federal government and worked and became the Regional Security Manager for a distribution company primarily concentrating on safety and security measures for distribution centers in the midwest, southern and western states. In 2009, I became a contract background investigator for the federal government. Conducting security clearance background investigations for federal and contract employees. In 2014, I decided to incorporate my experience in security, safety and background investigations and start my own company. Fall is prime time for theft of copper, tools, fuel, and equipment. Take a few minutes this week to complete a dusk security audit:

✅ Walk the perimeter at sunset and note what a thief would see.
✅ Test motion-activated and dusk-to-dawn lighting.
✅ Confirm gates, trailers, and Conex boxes are locked before dark.
✅ Verify cameras cover entry points, equipment yards, and blind spots.
✅ Remove or secure anything that could make access easier.

On a small construction crew, the best safety monitor may be the person working right beside you. 👥🛡️

A strong buddy system helps catch early signs of heat stress, fatigue, confusion, or unsafe shortcuts before they become serious incidents.

Encourage your crew to:
• Check in with one another throughout the shift
• Speak up when something doesn’t look right
• Take hydration and recovery breaks seriously
• Stop and reassess when fatigue affects judgment

Your construction site may be protected from the ground: but what about from above? 🚁🔒

Some theft rings use drones to scout high-value sites, identify copper, wiring, equipment, and staged materials, and observe security routines before making a move.

That means traditional fencing and locked gates may not be enough. A complete site security assessment should also consider aerial visibility, drone activity, material placement, lighting, camera coverage, access controls, and response procedures.

Clearing brush or working near tall grass this season? A few simple precautions can help prevent a serious medical emergency. 🐍🥾

• Wear high boots, long pants, and work gloves.
• Use a tool to move brush or debris: never reach blindly underneath.
• Watch where you step and check work areas before starting.
• If a snake is spotted, keep your distance and alert the crew. Never attempt to handle it.

If someone is bitten, move away from the snake, call 911 immediately, keep the person calm and still, and remove rings or tight clothing near the bite. Do not cut the wound, suck out venom, or apply a tourniquet. Take a photo of the snake only from a safe distance.

A thorough Friday shutdown checklist should include:
