Allison Access I’m legally blind, have endometriosis, and have worked as a disability rights lawyer for nearly 20 years.

I explain the ADA, Section 504, IDEA, and CRPD in practical terms and share tools to know your rights and build advocacy skills and confidence.

I am legally blind, and also have screws in my hips and here’s a funny story that just happened here in Doha on my way back to the Adirondacks.

Just a quick update from Armenia as I have been feeling a little under the weather and hoping to post more soon!

This was a minor vent… and a big thank-you to the people who support my work.

I’ve spent nearly 20 years working in disability rights law. I put weeks of research into creating a 50-state community integration guide because people need useful, accessible information. So when I see comments suggesting work like this should simply be available for free, it gets frustrating.

I’m also rebuilding my career after losing my job because of funding cuts, while managing my own healthcare needs and out-of-pocket costs. The time and research behind these resources matter. So do the platforms, accessibility tools, and equipment it takes to create and share them.

The Disability Power Arena helps me keep doing this work. I’m grateful to our members, and to everyone who follows, shares, reposts, subscribes, and encourages me. Every kind of support helps. You remind me that the right people are here to learn together and strengthen disability advocacy.

Okay, vent over. I’ll be back soon with my usual positive and educational content. ֎

Getting ready for the event with Inclusion Armenia!

We will be discussing disability advocacy and the importance of mental health and nervous system regulation.

This is very important to be an effective advocate.

FIND YOUR FUN!

10/10 ֎

Advocacy is meaningful work, and it can also be heavy. After nearly 20 years working in disability rights law in the U.S. and around the world, I know that caring for our mental health and nervous systems matters. Support, connection, rest, and joy can help us keep showing up for our communities.

I’m grateful to be joining Inclusion Armenia for this important conversation. Through my work and the Disability Power Arena, I want to keep building a disability rights movement where advocates can learn from one another and sustain this work together.

And sometimes, a good reminder is simple: find your fun!

Today I’m teaming up with Inclusion Armenia to talk with self-advocates and parents about disability advocacy, burnout, mental health, and nervous system regulation.

After nearly 20 years as a disability rights lawyer, I know how heavy this work can feel. We can’t be expected to carry everything, all the time. Caring for your mental health, regulating your nervous system, and finding your fun are part of staying connected to the work and to each other.

Advocacy needs you, too. ֎

I’ve spent nearly 20 years working in disability rights law in the U.S. and around the world. One thing I’ve learned is that the work is heavy, and none of us can take on every issue, every day, all at once.

Today, I’m bringing that message to my workshop with Inclusion Armenia’s Self-Advocates Group on disability and emotional burnout. We’ll talk about caring for our mental health and making room for nervous system regulation as much as we’re able.

That’s why I talk about “Find Your Fun.” Joy, rest, connection, music, art, sports, and the things that let your mind breathe can help sustain us for the long term. Finding your fun is part of sustaining yourself so you can keep showing up for the work.

I share this with members of Disability Power Arena, my disability rights learning and advocacy community. What helps you reconnect with joy?

DISABILITY ADVOCACY IS HEAVY.

You cannot take on every issue, every day, all at once.

I’ve spent nearly 20 years working in disability rights law in the U.S. and around the world. I’ve learned that caring deeply also means caring for ourselves.

YOUR MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS.
YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM MATTERS.

We may not be able to control everything happening around us.

We can make room for rest, connection, and moments that help us feel grounded, as much as we’re able.

FIND YOUR FUN.

Finding your fun is not separate from advocacy. It helps sustain you so you can keep doing it.

You do not have to feel guilty for finding joy while there is still work to be done.

WHAT’S YOUR FUN?

In the Arena, our members find joy in all kinds of ways:

…and so much more.

I’ve spent nearly 20 years working in disability rights law in the U.S. and around the world. I’ve seen how much advocacy asks of people: to keep speaking up, responding to injustice, and working toward change while also managing everything happening in our own lives.

Today, I’m joining Inclusion Armenia’s Self-Advocates Group to talk about disability and emotional burnout. I want to share something I’ve learned through my work and through Disability Power Arena, my disability rights learning and advocacy community: caring for our mental health and supporting our nervous systems, as much as we’re able, matters.

We cannot take on every issue, every day, all at once. Sustainable advocacy needs room for rest, boundaries, support, connection, and joy. You do not have to feel guilty for finding joy while there is still work to be done.
