Fire ant swarms, wasp stings, chiggers, and ticks. August is their month. Every sting and every attachment site is a break in the barrier, and skin infections follow those breaks (Stevens et al., 2014). For most people that means a sore spot for a week. For people with diabetes or poor circulation, it can mean cellulitis and a wound that will not close. If a sting or bite site is spreading, draining, or warm to the touch, let a wound specialist look at it and call PAM Health Advanced Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center at (941) 342-1661.

Summer bug bites are usually just an itchy announance. But every bite is a break in the skin barrier, and every scratch widens it.

🪲Mosquitoes cause most insect bites worldwide and scratching them open is a known route to secondary infection (StatPearls, 2026). That is how a bite becomes cellulitis, which drives an estimated 14.5 million United States cases a year and hits the lower legs hardest (Raff & Kroshinsky, 2016).
🪲A bite reaction builds over hours. Cellulitis builds over days. If the redness is spreading on day three, that is not healing.

PAM Health Advanced Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Centers recommends evaluateing bite wounds early, before a small bite becomes a big problem. If you are experiencing a worsening bug bite, call (941) 342-1661 to schedule an appointment.

🦈 While the country watches Shark Week this week, we wanted to educate on Charcot foot, a limb-threatening collapse of the diabetic foot that often starts silently with warmth, swelling, and redness with little or no pain. Caught early, the limb is usually saved. Missed, it deforms and ulcerates, and amputation becomes part of the conversation.

❣️Early diagnosis and treatment are critical. Treatment often includes immediate offloading of the foot, specialized bracing or casting, and close follow-up with a wound care and limb preservation team.

📞If you have diabetes and notice sudden swelling, warmth, or redness in your foot, don't wait. Contact us at (941) 342-1661 to schedule your evaluation.

Stay Cool, Stay Compliant

We know it's hot, but stopping compression in the summer may mean your ulcer healing stalls - or worse - reoccurs. So, here's a few tips and tricks to make the compression a bit more tolerable this summer:

💫Put them on first thing in the morning. Your legs are usually less swollen when you first wake up, making stockings easier to apply and more effective.
💫Keep cool. Stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible, using fans, and take breaks from the heat.
💫Choose lightweight clothing. Loose-fitting, breathable fabrics and lightweight materials can help keep you cooler.
💫Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water supports healthy circulation and may help reduce swelling.
💫Keep moving. Short walks and gently ankle exercises can improve blood flow and reduce leg fatigue.
💫Moisturize at night. Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer after removing your stockings to keep your skin healthy.
💫Wash stockings regularly. Clean compression garments maintain their elasticity and feel more comfortable against your skin.

PAM Health Advanced Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine Center is here to help you stay comfortable while protecting your leg health all year long. (941) 342-1661.

At PAM Health Specialty Hospital & Outpatient Wound Center of Sarasota, we know that is deeply personal and that takes on a whole new meaning in the face of adversity.

Freedom can be returning home after a hospital stay. Finally healing from a chronic wound. Or breathing on your own.

Independence can be walking again after an injury. Or doing daily tasks to care for yourself.

This Fourth of July, we celebrate the freedom and independence that defines our country 250 years after its founding. The same spirit that has built the foundation of the United States is what propels us forward with our patients each and every day. We honor the hard work and perseverance of our patients as they work to rebuild independence, and the bravery and sacrifice of those who preserve our country’s independence!
