Traditional Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage: Why Patients Should Pay Attention Before Open Enrollment Ends
As healthcare professionals and medical business owners, we strongly believe that Traditional Medicare offers significant advantages over Medicare Advantage plans, especially for patients requiring specialized and ongoing medical treatment. Traditional Medicare allows patients to receive care from virtually any physician, hospital, specialist, or therapy provider nationwide that accepts Medicare, without the restrictive provider networks commonly associated with Medicare Advantage plans. For patients suffering from chronic wounds, lymphedema, vascular conditions, and other complex medical issues, having consistent access to qualified healthcare professionals is essential. Healthcare decisions should be based on medical necessity and the professional judgment of healthcare providers, not unnecessary administrative barriers imposed by insurance companies.
Over the years, we have personally witnessed a concerning decline in reimbursement from Medicare Advantage plans, while the administrative burden of providing care continues to increase. As owners of medical practices specializing in rehabilitation, wound care, and lymphedema treatment, we have experienced increasing challenges involving reduced payments, prior authorization requirements, claim denials, delayed reimbursements, and restrictions on medically necessary treatment. These challenges continue to place tremendous financial pressure on independent healthcare providers. When insurance companies reduce reimbursement while making it increasingly difficult to obtain approval and payment for necessary services, patients can ultimately suffer through reduced access to specialized providers and potential interruptions in their treatment. From our experience, these problems have continued to worsen rather than improve.
One of the most alarming developments is occurring right here in Southwest Florida. Lee Health has announced that beginning January 1, 2027, its hospitals and physicians will no longer participate in affected UnitedHealthcare commercial and Medicare Advantage networks. Sarasota Memorial Health Care System has also announced that it expects Sarasota Memorial Hospital and First Physicians Group to be removed from UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare Advantage network on January 1, 2027, unless an agreement is reached. These are two major healthcare systems serving thousands of patients throughout Southwest Florida. Both organizations have publicly raised concerns involving insurance restrictions, patient access, and contractual disagreements. Patients enrolled in affected UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans could face higher out-of-pocket expenses, limited access to their established physicians, or the difficult decision of finding new healthcare providers. Importantly, these announced network changes do not affect patients with Traditional Medicare in the same way. This is a powerful example of why patients must understand the potential consequences of choosing a privately managed Medicare Advantage plan.
As healthcare providers who deal with these insurance challenges every day, we encourage patients to carefully consider the long-term benefits of Traditional Medicare, preferably combined with appropriate supplemental insurance when available and affordable. Although Medicare Advantage plans frequently advertise low premiums and additional benefits, patients should look beyond the marketing and consider what happens when they actually need extensive medical treatment. Traditional Medicare generally provides broader provider access, fewer private-plan authorization barriers, and greater flexibility when seeking specialized care. Medicare Advantage may still be suitable for some patients, particularly those prioritizing lower premiums and an annual out-of-pocket maximum. However, our professional experience has shown us how challenging these plans can become when patients require consistent, medically necessary services. Our message is simple: Protect your access to healthcare, understand your insurance coverage, and make an informed decision before giving up the flexibility of Traditional Medicare. Your health and your choice of medical providers matter.
