Every single day, my inbox fills up with people asking to buy my insurance agency. Private equity groups, "M&A advisors," "growth platforms" — most of it automated, from people who have never set foot on the Gulf Coast.

I'm not selling. But the reason they keep asking is worth understanding, because it's been quietly changing insurance for Florida families and business owners.

The short version: investors have been buying up small, local agencies all over the country and folding them into big national companies. By 2024, roughly 87% of insurance agency sales were backed by private equity. When your local agency gets absorbed, the friendly person you used to call often gets replaced by a 1-800 number — and your renewal stops getting the personal attention it used to.

In Florida, where carriers come and go and every property sits in some kind of flood zone, that attention matters a lot. Especially when it comes to flood coverage, where getting it wrong can cost you everything after a storm.
