💙💙💙
On November 1, 2022, my life changed forever. That was the day I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (Type 1.5).
I remember leaving that appointment feeling scared, overwhelmed, and completely lost. I had to mourn the life I knew before diabetes.
Suddenly, every meal, every workout, every vacation, and every sleepless night came with decisions most people never have to think about.
I became afraid to eat because I was terrified of my blood sugar going high. I became afraid to sleep because I worried I would go low during the night and not wake up.
Even going to the gym was no longer enjoyable. Instead of focusing on my workout, I worried about going low, needing a snack, and what people would think. Honestly, this is something I still struggle with today.
Then there was my fear of needles. I’ve always had a debilitating fear of them. In the beginning, I couldn’t even give myself my own insulin. My husband had to do every injection while I cried. Every. Single. Time.
Eventually, I found the courage to do it myself.
When I started wearing a continuous glucose monitor, I worried people would notice the sensor on my arm and see me differently.
Looking back now, I wish someone had told me those fears were normal. I wish someone had told me that one day the injections would become routine, the sensor I once wanted to hide would become something I wear with pride, and most importantly… that I wasn’t alone.
Before my diagnosis, I honestly didn’t know anyone living with Type 1 Diabetes. Then I remembered watching Mackenzie Hall (from MTV Teen Mom ) openly share her journey. Seeing someone live such a full, active life while managing Type 1 gave me hope when I needed it most.
Fast forward to today, and I still can’t believe I’m writing this…
Mackenzie Taylor | BodyByMac , Angie Lewis - MSN,RN, APNP, APRN , and I are joining forces to create something big.
We’re creating Mermaid Turns Blue…a day dedicated to raising awareness, building community, and reminding every child, adult, parent, sibling, spouse, and friend affected by Type 1 Diabetes that you are never alone.
