If your period has ever made you cancel plans, double up on protection "just in case," or wonder if what you're experiencing is even normal — I want you to know: abnormal bleeding is the most common reason women come see me, and there's almost always a clear, treatable reason behind it.

Two of the most frequent causes are uterine polyps and fibroids. Polyps are small growths on the lining of the uterus; fibroids are muscular growths in or around the uterine wall. Both can cause heavy, prolonged, or unpredictable periods — and both are things we can usually diagnose and treat in a single, simple office visit using a procedure called hysteroscopy. No operating room, no general anesthesia, no guessing.

Biopsies are incredibly common after an abnormal Pap smear, colposcopy, or unusual ultrasound finding, and the vast majority come back benign. What a biopsy gives you is certainty, instead of months of wondering.
