First Physicians Group pediatrician Susan Mihm, MD, shares simple ways families can support healthy growth and well-being, from prioritizing sleep and daily activity to limiting screen time, creating a healthy relationship with food and understanding nutrition from a young age.

πŸ’¬ β€œIf we, as parents, model a healthy lifestyle and include our children in this, they'll value those things as well," shared Dr. Mihm. "So play with your kids and spend quality active time with them. There are lifelong benefits for you and your children.”

πŸš’β€οΈ Some calls change lives forever. While responding to a structure fire, on Sunday, Aug. 2, Sarasota County Firefighter Lt. Clay Huber suffered a cardiac arrest. In an instant, Lt. Huber, who had been helping others, became the one in need of help.

Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of Sarasota County Emergency Services personnel, Lt. Huber was resuscitated and rushed to SMH-Sarasota for rapid intervention and critical care.

Today, he was greeted by nearly 100 fellow firefighters, EMTs, paramedics and other first responders who filled our Sarasota campus with applause, cheers and emotion as they celebrated the survival of one of their own.

It was a powerful reminder that behind every uniform is a family, a team and an entire community standing together.

πŸ™ To our first responders: You show up for us on our hardest days. It was our honor to be there for one of yours. Wishing Lt. Huber and his family continued strength and healing.

⚾ Wondering what a Cardiac Athletic Screening for Adolescents (CASA) involves? It's quick, painless and non-invasive.

The free screening begins with the American Heart Association’s 14-point questionnaire, followed by a blood pressure check and an electrocardiogram (EKG) to help detect potential heart abnormalities.

Each year, nearly 2,000 seemingly healthy people under age 25 die from sudden cardiac arrest in the U.S., often without warning. πŸ’¬ β€œBut about 90% of them can be prevented with a simple cardiac screening,” says Miranda Sturgeon, Manager of Cardiovascular Diagnostics at SMH. β€œTo get that peace of mind knowing your child is safe, that they’re good to go on the field,” it’s a cause close to Sturgeon’s heart.

That's why SMH and Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital Specialty Physicians team up each year to present Cardiac Athletic Screening for Adolescents, giving parents peace of mind and helping ensure young athletes are ready to safely take the field.
