There’s something special about stepping away from the everyday routine and spending uninterrupted time together.

Our trip to Tofino was filled with fresh air, beautiful scenery, family time, and memories we’ll cherish for years to come.

These moments with my own family are what keep me grounded and remind me why I believe so strongly in creating meaningful connections.

Now we’re home, refreshed, and ready for all that’s ahead. Thank you for following along on our adventures and for continuing to support Key Pediatric Therapy.

What’s one favorite memory your family made this summer? I’d love to hear!

One of my favorite parenting tricks is turning everyday tasks into a race against the clock.

Instead of saying, “Clean up your toys,” try:

“Let’s see if we can put all the blocks away before the timer beeps!”

A few ways we use this at home:

🧸 Toy Cleanup: Can we get all the toys in the bin before 2 minutes is up?

👕 Getting Dressed: Can you put on your shirt and socks before the timer beeps?

🪥 Morning Routine: Let’s see if we can brush teeth, wash hands, and get ready before the timer ends.

🍽️ Mealtime Cleanup: Can we clear the table before the timer goes off?

🚗 Leaving the House: Let’s see if everyone can get shoes on and be at the door before the timer ends.

Why it works:

✨ Makes time visible

✨ Creates motivation without rewards

✨ Gives a clear start and finish

✨ Builds independence and executive functioning skills

✨ Turns chores into play

The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is making everyday routines feel fun and achievable.

What’s something your child could “beat the timer” doing today? ⏰

One of my favorite ways to encourage communication is by offering choices!

Instead of asking an open-ended question like:

“What do you want?”

Try offering two simple options:

“Do you want apples or crackers?”

“Do you want the blue cup or the green cup?”

“Should we read this book or that one?”

Why does this help?

✨ Reduces the pressure of coming up with an answer independently

✨ Encourages communication and decision-making

✨ Gives children an opportunity to practice using words, gestures, signs, or AAC to express themselves

✨ Helps build confidence while communicating

Offering choices creates natural opportunities for children to communicate throughout the day—and it can be used during meals, playtime, bedtime, and everyday routines.

Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference.

You’re probably supporting your child’s language development more than you realize.

If you:
🔑 Read books together
🔑 Sing songs in the car
🔑 Talk about your day
🔑 Let them help in the kitchen
🔑 Follow their lead during play
🔑 Pause and give them time to respond

…you’re already building strong language skills. Every conversation, every silly song, and every shared moment counts.

You’re doing a great job, parents.

And if you’re wondering whether your child is on track or just don’t know where to start, I’m here to help. Reach out to schedule a free 15-minute consultation—sometimes a little guidance is all you need.

Okay guys, you’re going to laugh at me…but this silly game, “Mommy Chicken,” has absolutely SAVED my summer sanity.

You know that 4 p.m. overstimulation when you’re trying to cook dinner and your kids are climbing on you, asking for snacks every 30 seconds, and somehow arguing over absolutely nothing?

Here’s how it works:

I tell my kids, “You neverrrrr know when I’m going to turn into Mommy Chicken…”

Then they have to quietly sneak up and tap me on the leg. Most of the time I completely ignore them and keep cooking, which makes them giggle and try even harder to be sneaky. But every once in a while, I suddenly throw my arms up, yell, “BUK BUK BUK!” and chase them around the kitchen like a giant chicken.

The key is to be completely unpredictable and ridiculously dramatic. They think it’s absolutely hilarious, and somehow I get to make dinner with way less chaos.

Forget all the expensive toys… apparently pretending to be a chicken is what wins Summer 2026.

Don’t let anyone tell you to “wait and see” if your gut is telling you something feels off.

Trust your instincts. Book the consult. Your child has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

What if just a few months of early support could make communicating easier, build their confidence, and prevent bigger challenges later?

The best outcome of an evaluation is hearing, “Everything looks great!”

The second best outcome is catching a concern early, when therapy is often the most effective.

Did you know that one of the best ways to support communication is to talk less?

Many children need extra time to process what they hear, think of a response, and put their words together. When we jump in too quickly, we may accidentally take away an opportunity for them to communicate.

Wait time is the pause you give your child after asking a question, making a comment, or giving a direction.

Why wait time matters:
🔑 Gives children time to process language

🔑 Helps them find the words they want to say

🔑Encourages independent communication

🔑Builds confidence when speaking

🔑Creates more opportunities for language practice

Try this: The next time you ask your child a question, silently count to 5 before repeating yourself or filling in the answer.

You might be surprised by what happens when you give them a little extra time.
