😷 infection before getting a ?

☎️ Ask your doctor how long you should wait to get a booster.

👨‍⚕️ Infectious Disease Specialist Manuel Gordillo, MD, also offers this guidance:

💬 Vaccinated people who contract COVID-19 before getting a dose can safely delay getting the shot for 60 to 90 days after infection.

💬 Most medical experts are now recommending that patients wait 2 to 3 months after infection to get the booster shot, because that recent infection offers some protection, & waiting will allow the immune system to reset & mount a more robust response to the vaccine booster dose.

⌛ However, other experts — those in the minority camp — suggest getting a booster as early as 2 weeks after recovering from COVID, because there is some evidence that it may help mitigate incidence or symptoms of long COVID.

😷 🗓️ With protection waning from COVID-19 vaccines received in early 2021, breakthrough infections are becoming more common among people who've not yet gotten their booster dose.

☎️ If you find yourself in this situation, talk to your doctor about when would be best to get your booster shot after you recover from COVID.

💙 As our hospital & our community continue to battle this unprecedented COVID-19 surge, we encourage you to help protect the health of your loved ones & neighbors:

💪 Get vaccinated, if you're able.
😷 Wear a mask in public (everyone age 2 & older).
🏡 Stay home if you're sick.

* * * *

* Fully vaccinated is defined as 2 weeks post final vaccine dose (2nd shot of Pfizer/Moderna or 1st shot of J&J).

** It's important to note that SMH does not have a pediatric ICU; children with severe COVID-19 are transferred to specialized facilities.

*** SMH's 2020 record COVID-19 patient census was 130 inpatients.

Happy and proud of seeing one of my blessings ready for first grade!! 😷📚🏫🚌😷⠀

Here are the most common questions I’m hearing these days about masks:⠀

🙋🏼‍♂️❓Is your daughter using a mask to go to school? Did she use it last year? ⠀
😷 YES and YES. All through Kindergarten she used her mask, very consistently. Didn’t miss a single day because of sickness. ⠀

🙋🏾❓Did you notice any respiratory discomfort while using the mask ? ⠀
😷 No, she didn’t have any respiratory difficulties. She was able to talk, participate in class(including PE) and play without any issues. She even wore it to her dance studio.⠀

🙋‍♀️❓Any allergic reaction or a rash in the face?⠀
😷 No, I never noticed any rash or swelling in the face while using the mask. ⠀

🙋🏻‍♂️❓Hospitalization rate is just 1-2% in kids, why do you insist on the mask ? ⠀
😷 1% seems to be a tiny number until your own kid is the one admitted to the hospital. Also when my daughter wears the mask, she is also protecting the child sitting next to her that has severe asthma, the one with a newborn sibling at home, the one whose grandfather just finished chemotherapy, her friend with diabetes, etc. ⠀

🙋🏻‍♀️❓Are you concerned as a pediatrician about your kid neuro-cognitive development because of the mask?⠀
😷 Not at all! Kids can adapt very easily and quickly. I strongly believe in plasticity (adaptability) and consistency in early development. ⠀

😷 If we get home and focus on talking to our kids, have face to face activities/interactions with them (yes, away from the screen), I don’t see a reason to be worried. ⠀

😷 In other areas of the world, like Hong Kong, where large portions of the population wear masks, for years now, there’s no evidence of neuro-cognitive delay in children. ⠀

Remember, it is our responsibility to keep our children safe, they can’t decide by themselves. ⠀

Good luck in this new school year!!! 📚 🏫 🚌
