Health Up Institute

Health Up Institute Creating a world of empowered, and knowledgeable patients committed to achieving optimal health.

Dr. Theresa Peter was born and raised in the small northern Michigan town of Alpena. It was with these roots she spent a lot of time outdoors, connecting with nature and becoming a budding scientist. Her interests lead her to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry with a Math minor, followed by working at Abbott as a research scientist. While at Abbott, she attended an Executive Master

’s program from University of Michigan’s School of Public Health and earned a Master of Science degree in Industrial Health (Occupational and Environmental Health). After six years at Abbott, she started a family and has two beautiful children. She took a hiatus from work to raise her girls until school age, during which she continued her ever-expanding interests in what makes us healthy, balanced and complete. During this time she became a Yoga Instructor (RYT 200) and a Reiki Master Teacher (hands on holistic healing art). Instead of returning to work in the private sector, Dr. Peter knew she needed to work one on one with people in order to help them achieve optimal health. She decided to further her studies at National University of Health Sciences and obtained a degree as a chiropractic physician. During those studies, she continued her focus on biochemistry, botanicals, and nutrition. She also studied pharmacology to better help patients desiring to decrease their need for prescription medications. With her experience and knowledge, she combines muscle testing with clinical diagnostic tests, such as blood, urine, Hair Mineral Analysis, Saliva Hormone Testing (Bio-identical Hormone replacement therapy), Quantitative Iodine and Halide/Toxic Metal testing. She looks at her patients from a multi-dimensional approach and individualizes treatment plans for optimal health.

We are often told that depression is purely a "chemical imbalance" in the brain. But at Health Up Institute, we ask a different question: What is causing the imbalance? 🤔

True mental health resilience isn't just about managing symptoms; it’s about addressing the systemic triggers that drag the mind down. From undiagnosed food sensitivities that spark neuroinflammation to iodine deficiencies that leave the thyroid—and your mood in a sluggish state, the body and mind are in a constant, intimate dialogue.

Healing isn't a linear path, but it becomes much more manageable when you have the right map. If you’ve felt "stuck" in a cycle of low mood, it’s time to look under the hood.

"You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step." — Martin Luther King Jr.

When you’re in the depths of depression, looking at a "total lifestyle change" feels impossible. So don't look at the whole mountain. Just look at the next meal. Just look at the next glass of water. Just look at the next appointment. Small, consistent steps in gut health lead to massive shifts in mental health. 👏🏻💕

It’s a widespread health myth that sea or gourmet salts are iodine-deficient. In reality, comparing standard, refined sodium chloride—which is artificially infused with iodine gas—to natural, unrefined salt is truly like comparing apples to oranges. 🍎🍊

While our bodies do need iodine, the health issues caused by heavily processed table salt simply outweigh the benefits. Here is our approach to supporting your body the right way:

➡️ Salt it naturally: Stick to whole, unrefined salts like Sea Salt, Himalayan Pink Salt, or Redmond’s to keep your minerals balanced.
➡️ Supplement smartly: Meet your body's specific iodine needs through a high-quality, purified supplement tailored just for you.

Optimal health doesn’t have to be complicated. Reach out today to let us help you build a personalized wellness plan! 💕

😴 Your metabolism doesn’t punch out when you go to sleep.

While you rest, your body is hard at work regulating Leptin (the fullness hormone) and Ghrelin (the hunger hormone). Sleep deprivation flips the switch—spiking hunger and stalling your metabolic repair.

At Health Up Institute, we know that "Weight Balancing" is impossible without high-quality recovery. Prioritizing 7–9 hours isn't just a suggestion; it’s a clinical necessity for hormonal harmony. ✨

The Vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in your body, acting as a two-way street between your gut and your brain.

When the gut is in a state of dysbiosis or reacting to food triggers, the "traffic" on this highway becomes congested with inflammatory markers. This physical congestion manifests as mental heaviness.

To support your mental health this May, consider how you can "clear the road" by focusing on gut-healing protocols.👏🏻 Reach out today so we can help!

When we talk about depression, we have to talk about the thyroid.

Iodine is the essential building block for thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). Without enough iodine, your thyroid can’t produce the energy your brain needs to function. This "hypothyroid" state often manifests as deep fatigue, cognitive slowing, and a heavy, depressive mood. 😪

If you’ve been told your "labs are normal" but you still feel the weight of depression, we need to look closer at your iodine levels and how your thyroid is actually utilizing them.

"I found that with depression, one of the most important things you can realize is that you’re not alone. You’re not the first to go through it, you’re not gonna be the last to go through it."
— Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

👏🏻 I love this quote because depression thrives in isolation. It makes you feel like no one understands. But the biological reality of mental health is a shared human experience. By looking at the physiological roots, like gut health and nutrition, we can take the "shame" out of the diagnosis and replace it with a plan for wellness. 💕

Through comprehensive GI testing and an individualized treatment plan, we can help balance and remove the physiological and physical root cause by addressing a gut that is not giving you the serotonin that you need.

Inflammation is the body’s natural response to a perceived threat, and for many, that threat is a common food like gluten, dairy, or soy. 🍞🥛

Chronic inflammation doesn’t stay localized in the gut; it can cross the blood-brain barrier. This "neuroinflammation" is a leading biological factor in clinical depression. By identifying food sensitivities, we aren't just "going on a diet"—we are putting out the fire in the brain to allow for mental clarity and emotional resilience. 🔥
