David Mertins spent his life studying the sky.

A childhood fascination with hurricanes grew into a physics degree, a master's in nuclear physics, and real research on a national neutrino experiment.

He came back to teach at the University of West Georgia, where his students remember him for making the hardest ideas simple and for genuinely caring whether they succeeded. He ran the university's observatory and led stargazing nights for the whole community, sharing the same wonder about the universe that shaped his own life.

David passed away at 39.

After a lifetime spent looking up, he now joins the stars himself. A symbolic portion of his ashes will fly aboard our Remembrance spacecraft in October 2027.

Mickey Murray drove countless miles to watch rockets launch.

Deerfield Beach to Titusville, sometimes multiple times a week, for decades. Space Shuttles, rocket launches, anything with a countdown. He had a favorite spot at William J. Manzo Memorial Park, and the strangers who stood beside him became friends.

He was a Miami Dolphins fan since their inception. A Hurricanes fan whose wardrobe proved it. The guy who texted the whole family every week so nobody missed kickoff.

Mickey spent a lifetime watching other people go to space.
In October 2027, he goes.

A symbolic portion of Mickey's ashes will launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9. His family hopes that somehow, from the other side, he will enjoy being the one in orbit this time.

Many families I talk with have the same situation at home.

A box or an urn, sitting somewhere, longer than they expected. The decision is hard, and nobody ever explains what the options actually are.

So I wrote a guide.

It covers every meaningful option for cremated ashes. Keeping them home, burial, scattering, memorial diamonds, living memorials like reefs and trees, and space. All of them, with real costs, including the options that have nothing to do with my company.

Kindyn Jinkins wanted to work for SpaceX.
In October 2027, he flies on a Falcon 9.

Kindyn was 27. A father of twin boys, Lucas and Niko. The kind of guy who built his own computers, perfected skateboard tricks, and once locked his own family out of their home network. His son Niko is named for his hero, Nikola Tesla.

When Kindyn passed in 2023, he donated all of his organs. Five people started new chapters because of him. His heart beats today in a man named Blake, who got a rocket tattoo in Kindyn's honor.

His mother, Melanie, wrote his tribute herself. It ends with a line I have read many times now:

"Kindyn, you sought the stars, while you were the center of our universe."

Lucas and Niko will be able to track their dad's spacecraft by GPS as it passes overhead.

There is one flight John Getter never took.

Dick Scobee, commander of the Space Shuttle Challenger, was a personal friend. He recommended John fly as the first reporter in space. That flight never happened.

In October 2027, his friend of more than 30 years, Jimmy Wong, is making sure John gets there.

John spent more than 50 years covering space. He covered the Space Shuttle program from Houston for 16 years, with his reports reaching audiences in 135 countries. He logged more than 200 minutes of weightlessness on NASA's "Vomit Comet." He became personally acquainted with every surviving moonwalker. He wrote three books about space. He later served as a senior vice president at SPACEHAB, contributing to International Space Station media projects and the de-orbiting of the Russian MIR station.

Jimmy worked alongside John for those 30 years – zero-gravity flights, Iran-Contra, Moscow, Venezuela. He called John the most inquisitive and thoughtful reporter he ever worked with.

When John died, Jimmy knew exactly how to honor him.

His wife, Pat, said it simply: "Being an Ashtronaut will fulfill another dream."

Before founding Space Beyond, I worked on the Space Shuttle program. John spent years covering it. I have no doubt we were at some of the same launches.
