💙 September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness about a cancer that can be difficult to detect in its early stages.

Ovarian cancer symptoms can sometimes be subtle or mistaken for everyday health concerns. Persistent bloating, pelvic or abdominal discomfort, feeling full quickly, changes in bowel or bladder habits, or unusual fatigue are symptoms worth discussing with your doctor—especially when they are new, persistent, or unusual for you.

Awareness gives women the knowledge to recognize changes in their bodies and the confidence to speak up when something doesn't feel right.

This month, start the conversation. Know the signs. Know your risk. Listen to your body.

Su***de Prevention Starts With Paying Attention. 💙

In Hardin County, the su***de mortality rate was 22 deaths per 100,000 adults in the most recent Tennessee Department of Health county data package. That's more than a statistic. Behind every number is a person, a family, and a community left behind.
Su***de prevention isn't just about knowing the warning signs. It's about being willing to ask the question, start the conversation, and listen without judgment.
Watch for changes such as:

💙 Withdrawing from family and friends
💙 Significant changes in mood or behavior
💙 Expressing hopelessness or feeling like a burden
💙 Giving away possessions or saying goodbye
💙 Talking about death or su***de

And remember: asking someone if they're thinking about su***de does not put the idea in their head. It can open the door to a conversation that may save a life.

Ovarian cancer can be difficult to detect because its symptoms may be easy to overlook or mistake for other common health concerns.

Pay attention to changes in your body, including:
💜 Persistent bloating or abdominal swelling
💜 Pelvic or abdominal pain
💜 Feeling full quickly or difficulty eating
💜 Changes in bowel or bladder habits
💜 Unexplained fatigue
💜 Changes in your menstrual cycle

These symptoms can have many causes and don't necessarily mean you have ovarian cancer. But if something feels unusual, persistent, or different from your normal, talk with your healthcare provider.

Knowing your body, understanding your risk, and speaking up about changes can be important steps in taking care of your health.

☀️ Don’t Let the End of Summer Fool You—Keep Using Sunscreen!

Summer may be winding down, but your skin still needs protection from the sun. UV rays can cause sunburn, premature skin aging, and increase your risk of skin cancer—even on days that don't feel especially hot.

Before heading outdoors, remember to:
🧴 Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher
🔄 Reapply every 2 hours—and after swimming or sweating
👒 Wear a hat and protective clothing when possible
😎 Protect your eyes with UV-blocking sunglasses
🌤️ Seek shade when the sun is strongest

Whether you're enjoying one last lake day, working in the yard, or cheering from the sidelines, keep sunscreen in your routine until the very last days of summer—and beyond.

💙 EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: BRANDI CALKINS, RN 💙

Meet Brandi Calkins, Clinical Coordinator at The Darryl Worley Cancer Center!

Brandi is an essential part of our care team, serving our patients as both our clinical coordinator and an infusion nurse. From chemotherapy and immunotherapy to iron, antibiotics, injections, and other treatments, Brandi brings compassion and dedication to every patient she cares for.

When asked about the best part of working at Hardin Medical Center, Brandi said it’s the family she has found in her coworkers—supporting and encouraging one another both at work and in life. 💙

Outside of work, Brandi loves spending time with her husband, Justin, their daughter, Blakely, and their three dogs, Athena, Zeus, and Delilah. She also enjoys time with family and friends, bowling, reading, and visiting our local Mexican restaurants!

We are so thankful to have Brandi as part of the DWCC family and appreciate the difference she makes in the lives of our patients each day. Please help us show Brandi some love! 💙

Cancer treatment can involve more than chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or other therapies. Patients may also take medications to manage pain, nausea, fatigue, infections, and other treatment-related side effects.

But when multiple medications are involved, it’s important to make sure every medication still has a purpose and that the medications work safely together. Taking several medications at the same time—known as polypharmacy—can sometimes increase side effects or create additional challenges, especially for older adults.

That’s why open communication with your cancer care team matters. Don’t stop, add, or change a medication on your own. Instead, keep your healthcare providers informed about everything you are taking and ask whether your medication list should be reviewed.
