Yesterday marked 6 years since my sweet mom passed away.
Mom's death was very different than my dad's, and I think it's because I experienced so many years (over 10!) of anticipatory grief with Mom.
Anticipatory grief is the emotional distress experienced in anticipation of an impending loss and can manifest with symptoms similar to grief experienced after a death, such as sadness, anxiety, and withdrawal. I used to tell my kids for a dozen years to hug Mimi extra tight, as each day with her was a gift.
We got so many bonus years with my mom, who had several chronic conditions (COPD, diabetes, and heart disease were a few) and limited mobility. The six years she lived after my dad passed were tough and treasured. My older sister Susie took impeccable care of my mom for her last four years.
Besides resembling my mom, I carry on other traits and hobbies. I, too, love to read, write, and share stories. I enjoy movies and board games. I find much joy in a fabulous meal, whether it's a family home-cooked favorite or a new-to-me flavor. I enjoy puzzles, and now I'm enjoying thrifting, which has given me a new appreciation for my mom's passion for antiquing.
Miss you, Mom! β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ
