🧠✨ Understanding Stimming: What School Staff Need to Know

Stimming is a natural and meaningful way many children regulate their bodies, emotions, attention, and thinking. It shows up as movement, sounds, touch, visual patterns, or repetition.
🔄 While it’s often misunderstood, research and autistic lived experience show that stimming is not misbehavior. It’s a powerful regulation and communication tool that helps students feel safe and organized.
🧩 Stimming can support focus, reduce stress, manage sensory input, and even help with thinking and problem solving. For many students, it makes learning possible.
🤝 Stimming only becomes a concern when it causes harm or creates safety issues. In most cases, acceptance and understanding go further than correction.
🌱 When school staff understands why stimming happens, classrooms become more supportive, inclusive, and effective for all learners.

Thank you, Your Therapy Source!
