Barney and Mimi lost their only son 20 years ago. Now in their 70s, they only had each other.. To keep themselves from going crazy from loneliness, they started a lovely tradition: visiting a different neighbor’s house almost every night for dinner. This not only gave the elderly couple’s lives meaning, but also turned their neighborhood into one big family.

That all changed when a young couple with children moved in next door. Barney and Mimi were delighted to see them and brought over a gift. At first, the lady of the house seemed pleasant and happy to have guests—though a little tired. But as soon as she heard about the dinner tradition, she exploded.

"That's pathetic! Get out!" she shouted, throwing the gift and slamming the door in Barney and Mimi's faces.

Tears streamed down Mimi’s cheeks. She had never encountered such rudeness. For the first time, the elderly couple felt unwelcome in their own neighborhood.

But this was just the beginning.

Barney was in his yard when he saw the new neighbors' young daughter standing in the middle of the road—with a big truck rushing toward her. Dropping everything, Barney ran to the little girl.
