💜🎉 Congratulations, Richard! 🎉💜

We are proud to celebrate Dr. Richard G. Doiron, a resident who was recently recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award through the Maine Health Care Association Remember ME program.

Richard attended the recognition ceremony in Augusta surrounded by family, making the occasion even more special as his remarkable life of service was honored.

Richard grew up in a Gold Star family after his father was killed in action during World War II. Though Richard never had the opportunity to know his father, that loss instilled in him a lifelong commitment to service, patriotism, and helping others.

He later volunteered for the U.S. Army and served as a psychologist at Ireland Army Hospital at Fort Knox, where he helped combat veterans returning from Vietnam cope with the physical and emotional impacts of war. After his military service, Richard continued that mission throughout his professional career, spending decades as a psychologist serving veterans and ultimately serving as Chief Psychologist at Maine Medical Center.

This week, we proudly celebrate our Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and the incredible difference they make in the lives of our residents every day.

The National Association of Health Care Assistants (NAHCA) has chosen the theme "We're Unbelievable" for CNA Week 2026, and we couldn't agree more.

Pictured here are just a few of the outstanding CNAs who help make our Home a special place. These dedicated caregivers are often the first to greet our residents in the morning and the last to wish them goodnight. They build meaningful relationships that enrich the lives of the Veterans we are honored to serve.

We're honored to celebrate Scarborough resident and Veteran Richard Doiron as part the MHCA Remember ME program. Check out his incredible story. 💜💙

Richard Doiron, Maine Veterans' Homes, Scarborough

Dr. Richard G. Doiron, PhD, grew up in a Gold Star family. His father, Gilbert J. Doiron, was killed in action on October 31, 1941, when the destroyer USS Reuben James (DD-245) was torpedoed by a N**i submarine. Richard was not yet two years old and grew up never having known his father, but his sacrifice shaped the course of his life and instilled in him a deep sense of patriotism, duty, and service to others. Richard volunteered for the United States Army out of a profound respect for his country and the legacy of his father, entering active duty on January 5, 1968, and was assigned as a psychologist at Ireland Army Hospital at Fort Knox, Kentucky. There, he worked with returning combat Vietnam War veterans suffering from severe psychological and physical trauma. His role was critical in helping these men process their experiences and prepare to reenter civilian life after unimaginable hardships. Richard was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain on December 16, 1969. While his military service was significant, it was only the beginning of a lifetime devoted to caring for veterans.

After returning to Maine, Richard dedicated his professional career to serving veterans as a civilian psychologist. In addition to having a private practice until retirement, Richard also served as Chief Psychologist from 1987-2000 at Maine Medical Center in Portland. During this time, he earned his Diplomate from the American Board of School Neuropsychologists, one of the highest certifications and most honorable in his field. Remarkably, his final patient before retirement had served in Vietnam, just as many of his earliest patients had.

In a powerful and symbolic way, Richard’s life came full circle: his professional journey began with caring for combat veterans and ended the same way. From growing up as the son of a fallen hero to dedicating his life to helping those who served, raising a family with is wife Judith in Scarborough, Maine, Dr. Richard G. Doiron’s story is one of sacrifice, healing, and unwavering devotion to America’s veterans.

We took advantage of the beautiful weather on Cinco de Mayo to celebrate on the patio! ☀️🌵

Residents and staff enjoyed a fun afternoon of sunshine, festive hats, colorful decorations, and great company. As we like to say...you had me at tacos! 🌮🌮🌮

On Memorial Day, we gathered for a ceremony to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

The program included patriotic music, reflections, and moments of remembrance for our fallen heroes. We are grateful to all who participated and helped make the ceremony so meaningful.

Memorial Day reminds us that freedom comes at a cost, and we pause with gratitude to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. ❤️

We've been having fun celebrating National Skilled Nursing Care Week! 🥳

One of our activities was games, which included cup pong, Plinko, golf, and a bean bag toss. Team members earned raffle tickets for every game they played, with bonus tickets for the winners, all for the chance to win gift cards! 🏆🎟️

We were joined by two seniors from Cheverus High School who volunteered their time to run the games as part of their senior volunteer project. They did a great job!

NSNCW is all about celebrating the dedicated professionals who provide compassionate care and support to our residents every day. We are thankful for this incredible team and all they do to make our Home feel like family. ❤️

💃🎶 What an energizing and joyful visit!

We had the pleasure of welcoming Portland Youth Dance to our Home for a fun and interactive performance. Their energy was contagious, and our residents had such a great time moving their bodies, clapping along, and enjoying the music.

Thank you to this wonderful group of talented young dancers for sharing your time and spirit with us. 💙
