There's a lot of misinformation out there about divorce, and most of it just makes the process feel scarier than it needs to be. From what people assume about lawyers, court, and "winning," to what they think mediation actually means, a lot of it just isn't true.

The truth is, divorce doesn't have to look like what you see in movies or hear from someone else's bad experience. Every situation is different, and understanding what's actually true (and what's just myth) can make the whole process a lot less overwhelming.

βš–οΈ DO YOU REALLY NEED A DIVORCE ATTORNEY β€” OR DO YOU NEED A MEDIATOR?

For many couples, divorce doesn’t have to begin with two attorneys, two legal strategies, and a courtroom battle.

If you and your spouse are willing to work toward an agreement, divorce mediation can provide a more private, efficient, and cost-conscious path forward.

At Resolvium Mediation Group, we help couples work through the issues that matter most:

βœ“ Property and financial division
βœ“ Parenting plans and decision-making
βœ“ Child-related expenses
βœ“ Spousal support discussions
βœ“ Retirement and marital assets
βœ“ Terms needed to reach a comprehensive agreement

Instead of preparing to fight, start by determining whether there is something to resolve.

Mediation keeps the decisions where they belong β€” with you and your family.

And when independent legal advice is appropriate, you can still consult an attorney while using mediation to work toward resolution.

Your Terms. Your Divorce. Up to 5x Faster.

Life changes, and sometimes custody arrangements need to change with it. A new job, a move, a shift in the kids' needs, what worked two years ago might not work today.

Going back to court to modify custody can be slow, expensive, and stressful for everyone involved, especially the kids. Mediation offers another way. It gives both parents a space to sit down, talk through what's changed, and adjust the arrangement in a way that actually fits the family's current reality.

It's not about starting a new fight. It's about updating an old agreement so it works better for everyone, especially the kids caught in the middle.

If your custody arrangement no longer fits your life, mediation can help you change it, without the courtroom battle.

The longer you fight, the less you keep. Every month a divorce stays in conflict has a cost, and it's not always just financial.

Attorneys, court dates, back and forth negotiations, they all add up. While the fight continues, assets stay tied up, decisions stay stuck, and everyone's life, including the kids, stays on hold.

Mediation exists to break that cycle. Instead of spending months, or years, fighting over every detail, it creates a space to work things out faster, more affordably, and with a lot less damage along the way.

That doesn't mean giving up what's fair. It means no longer losing time and money in a fight that, in the end, nobody really wins.

The sooner the conversation starts, the more you get to keep, your assets, your energy, and your peace of mind.

If you have a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement, it can actually make mediation smoother, not more complicated.

A prenup (signed before marriage) or a postnup (signed during marriage) usually lays out how assets, debts, or property should be divided if the marriage ends. When both people already agree on those terms, mediation has a clear starting point instead of negotiating everything from scratch.

That said, having one doesn't mean everything is automatically settled. Sometimes parts of the agreement need to be reviewed, clarified, or adjusted based on what's changed since it was signed, kids, finances, property, life circumstances.

Mediation gives both people a space to work through those details together, with the agreement as a foundation rather than a fight.

If you don't have a prenup or postnup, that's okay too. Mediation still works, it just means more of the conversation starts from the beginning.

When a divorce or family dispute comes up, most people assume court is just "how it's done." But litigation is only one path, and it's usually the most expensive and stressful one.

Litigation means a judge makes the final decisions for you. It can take months (sometimes years), rack up legal fees, and often leaves both sides feeling like they lost something.

Mediation works differently. Instead of fighting it out in a courtroom, both people sit down with a neutral mediator to work through the issues together, parenting time, finances, property, and reach an agreement that actually works for their situation.

It's usually faster, more affordable, and gives both parties more control over the outcome instead of leaving it in someone else's hands.

That doesn't mean litigation is never necessary. Some situations genuinely require court. But for a lot of families, mediation is worth exploring first.

Many people assume you need to prove someone did something wrong to get a divorce, but that's not how it works in most cases anymore.

"No-fault" divorce simply means neither spouse has to blame the other or prove wrongdoing like infidelity or abandonment. You just need to show the marriage isn't working, and that's enough to move forward.

This shift matters because it changes the whole tone of the process. Instead of building a case against each other, couples can focus on what actually needs to be resolved: parenting time, finances, and dividing what you built together.

Mediation fits naturally into this approach. It gives both people a space to work through those decisions directly, without turning the divorce into a fight over who's "right."

Court is still there if you need it, but understanding no-fault divorce is often the first step toward a process that's less about conflict and more about moving forward.

When support payments suddenly stop, it's easy to assume court is the only path forward, but that's not always the case.

Before jumping straight into litigation, it's worth understanding why the payments stopped. Sometimes it's a genuine financial hardship, other times it's avoidance, and the right approach can look very different depending on the reason.

Mediation can often help both parties come back to the table and work out a realistic solution, without the time, cost, and stress that come with going to court. Court is still an option when needed, but it's not always the first, or best, step.

Knowing your options before reacting can save you time, money, and a lot of unnecessary conflict.
