Thinking about becoming a gestational carrier? đź’›

It’s a big decision, and you may wonder what the screening process actually looks like.

It starts with a simple application, then a real conversation with our intake team—where you can ask questions and start to get a feel for the journey ahead. From there, we walk through medical records, screenings, and matching with intended parents who truly align with you.

Every step is intentional.

By the time you reach medical clearance and begin the IVF process, you’re not just “checked off a list”—you’re prepared, supported, and ready.

The surrogate screening process is about making sure you feel confident, cared for, and fully informed about the journey ahead.

True or False? đź‘€

This one comes up a lot—and the answer is FALSE.

In gestational surrogacy, the baby is not genetically related to the gestational carrier. The embryo comes from the intended parents or donors, and legal agreements are in place before pregnancy begins to clearly establish parentage.

In the United States, surrogacy is a carefully guided process with medical, legal, and emotional support every step of the way.

Both sides have their own lawyers and agree on detailed contract covering compensation, rights, expectations, and “what-ifs.”

Everyone enters the journey with shared understanding, trust, and a clear plan from the start.

What is base compensation? đź’›

Base compensation is the main amount a gestational carrier receives for carrying a pregnancy. It reflects your time, commitment, and the physical demands of the journey.

This amount is agreed upon in your contract and is typically paid in monthly installments after a fetal heartbeat is confirmed.

Base compensation can vary based on experience, location, and the agency you work with.

It’s just one part of the full compensation package designed to support you throughout the journey.

Whether you are an intended parent preparing your family for a new baby or a gestational carrier explaining your pregnancy to your own children, knowing what to say can feel overwhelming.

There is no perfect script for talking to children about surrogacy. What matters most is showing up with honesty, patience, and a willingness to answer questions as they come.

Every family is built differently, and that is something to celebrate. By talking openly and positively about surrogacy, you help your child see their role in a story that is built on intention and care.

Over time, these conversations become easier. They also become a meaningful part of your child’s understanding of family, connection, and kindness.

Keep it simple. Keep it consistent. Let their curiosity lead the way.

“I loved my surrogacy journey. Do I really have to wait a whole year to do it again?” 💛

We hear this question often, and we get it! You’re healthy, feeling strong, and ready to give again. We love that you had a beautiful experience, and we know how strong the desire can be to help another family right away. But yes, most fertility clinics require a 12-month wait after delivery before you can begin a new journey.

Here’s why that time matters:

🩺 Your body is still recovering
Even when you feel good on the outside, your body is still doing important healing work. Your uterus, hormone levels, and iron stores all need time to rebuild.

🧠 Your mind needs recovery too
Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum bring a lot of emotional and mental change. Time to rest and reset can make a big difference before stepping into another journey.

đź’› Recovery now helps protect future journeys
Giving your body the time it needs supports a healthier, safer experience for you and the baby you may carry next.

At Shining Light Baby, we never want that waiting period to feel discouraging. That’s why surrogates can apply again at 6 months postpartum. By the time matching, screening, and approvals are complete, many are right at the 12-month mark clinics are looking for.

Loving surrogacy enough to want to do it again is a beautiful thing. Giving your body and mind time to heal is an act of love for yourself, your family, and the future baby you may carry.

Such a thoughtful surprise from intended parents "C&M" đź’®

We received these beautiful flowers and a sweet note as they begin their journey with surrogate Cara, and it truly meant so much to us. It’s moments like this that remind us how special these connections are right from the start.

There’s something really meaningful about the trust, excitement, and appreciation that come together at the beginning of a journey like this.

We’re so excited for what’s ahead for "C&M" and Cara, and honored to be part of it.

💭 “Can we actually afford surrogacy?”

It’s one of the most common (and valid) questions intended parents ask—and we get it. With the average U.S. surrogacy journey costing $200,000 or more, the price tag can feel overwhelming.

✨ Here’s the good news: Surrogacy grants exist—and they can help.

These are financial awards that don’t need to be repaid and are designed to ease the cost of fertility treatments, egg donation, and surrogacy for hopeful parents.

We’ve created a free, easy-to-use spreadsheet to help you:
✔️ Explore active grant opportunities
✔️ Track eligibility, deadlines, and application progress
✔️ Stay organized and reduce financial stress
