Lapidus type procedures are a great choice for severe bunions, but no surgeon should ever tell you that they never return. We have performed many revisions on these. Recurrences happen to all surgeons at some point because each patient, surgeon, and procedure add different variables that can result in unpredictability. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the surgeon faulted, or that the patient wasn’t following instructions. Surgeons are trained to do the procedure they think is best for that particular patient and that typically gives a good consistent result. We operate on the assumption that a patient’s anatomy is normal and will heal predictably. Patients are asked to follow all post operative instructions to help support the procedure that was chosen for them. Even if all factors are working together with their full potential, the result might not be as good as we hoped. Despite this, medicine and surgery continue to help people much more often than hurt them and this is why it continues to be done!
