A fall is a very common way in which older adults end up needing medical care or get sent to the hospital. In older adults, falls can most likely be a result of loss of balance or strength, or due to medication that causes dizziness. It is important to take a look at your loved one’s home and remove any hazards that could lead to a fall. This can be done by:

- Reducing clutter and hiding all exposed wires, cables, or other tripping hazards.
- Ensure all everyday items can be accessed without needing a step stool or ladder.
- Secure small rugs with non slip backing, or remove them entirely.
- Place non slip mats in showers and bath tubs.
- Make sure you and your loved ones understand the side effects of all their medications and how these may change as they continue to age.

Falls can be sudden and sometimes lead to serious injury. It is always best to be proactive rather than reactive when it comes to your loved ones care and safety, and at Synergy HomeCare in Schaumburg we are always ready to help whether that’s by answering your questions, or assisting inside the home. Call us today to see what works best for your family!

Deciding you or a loved one requires additional in-home care is a difficult decision, and certainly not one to take lightly or too quickly. When deciding if in-home caregiving is right for your family, it is important to follow some of these first steps:

- Have an open conversation with all family members. It is important to discuss expectations of how this additional care can help your family, especially the person receiving care, and to evaluate what the expectations and potential benefits of this care are.
- Evaluate your needs. Understanding how a home care provider can assist in your specific situation can make the transition to professional care smoother and more beneficial for all involved.
- Meet with multiple agencies. All providers are a little different, and taking the time to meet with multiple different home care providers ensures you will receive the best possible care.

Whether we are the right provider for your family or not, Synergy HomeCare Schaumburg is always available to meet with you and your family and help you decide what path is best for you. Give us a call today to take your first steps!

After a stay at the hospital nearly all patients are most comfortable recovering at home, but it is essential to stick to making recovery a consistent and concerted effort. Whether recovering from a fall, a stroke, or an accident, a full recovery from an injury may not be possible without the following:
- Carefully reviewing all information given by the hospital or rehab facility
- Making sure you understand how to properly use any prescribed medical equipment, such as a walker
- Sticking to prescribed therapy sessions and complete all at-home exercises between sessions
- Asking for help when needed or the workload becomes too much

Every person’s recovery journey is different, and caring for a parent or loved one while they recover from a stay at the hospital is a difficult task. Synergy Schaumburg is always prepared to help you and your loved ones through these difficult recovery journeys!

Many people worry that their parents or other loved ones may be showing signs of dementia as they age, and, though occasional lapses in memory are normal for everyone, it is important to be able to spot the signs of progressive conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. In addition to memory loss, you should be on the lookout for loss of another functioning ability that affects day to day life. This can include:
Struggling to complete tasks that have never been an issue in the past
Wearing clothes that are not appropriate for the weather
Intense mood swings or drastic changes in behavior
No longer participating in their hobbies or connecting with their friends

This is not an exhaustive list, as dementia can take many forms and symptoms can vary from person to person, but if you notice any of these behaviors it is time to call your loved one’s healthcare provider.
At Synergy HomeCare in Schaumburg we are always happy to answer more questions as you navigate the next steps in your loved one’s medical care.
