“I feel like I have a completely different body the week before my period.”

If you’ve ever said this, your menstrual cycle may be an important piece of the puzzle. Research suggests that hormonal fluctuations across the menstrual cycle can influence immune activity and that some autoimmune conditions can worsen during the premenstrual phase.

That doesn’t mean hormones are necessarily the cause of your autoimmune disease, but they may influence how your symptoms behave.

Start tracking symptoms + cycle day for a few months. Patterns can be incredibly valuable when trying to understand your individual triggers.

Educational content only; autoimmune symptoms should be evaluated and managed based on your individual diagnosis and clinical history.

A daily iron supplement isn’t always the best approach.

One reason? Hepcidin. This hormone helps regulate iron absorption, and oral iron can temporarily increase hepcidin, which may reduce absorption from subsequent doses. Research has found that alternate-day dosing can increase fractional iron absorption compared with consecutive-day dosing, although studies on overall treatment outcomes have produced mixed results.

So if you’re taking iron and experiencing GI side effects—or your ferritin isn’t improving as expected—it may be worth discussing your dose, timing, and dosing frequency with your healthcare provider.

And remember: replacing iron is only part of the equation. Finding out WHY your ferritin is low is just as important.

Educational information only. Iron supplementation should be individualized based on your labs and clinical situation.

Low ferritin is common, but simply taking an iron supplement isn’t always enough.

If you don’t address the reason your iron stores became depleted in the first place, they may continue to stay low or keep dropping.

Whether it’s heavy menstrual bleeding, digestive issues, low stomach acid, inadequate intake, or blood loss, identifying the underlying cause is just as important as replacing the iron.

Have you ever had your ferritin checked? Let me know in the comments! ⬇️

Have you ever been told your iron levels are “normal,” but you still feel exhausted?

The truth is, many routine lab panels don’t tell the whole story. You can have a normal hemoglobin and still have low iron stores. That’s where ferritin comes in.

Low ferritin may contribute to:
✨ Fatigue
✨ Brain fog
✨ Hair loss
✨ Restless legs
✨ Low mood
✨ Poor exercise tolerance

While these symptoms can have many different causes, low ferritin is one possibility that’s often overlooked if only basic iron markers are checked.

If you’re struggling with persistent fatigue or other unexplained symptoms despite being told your labs are “normal,” it may be time to take a closer look at the full picture.

Feeling exhausted, mentally foggy, or struggling with low mood, but your blood work is “normal”? 😮‍💨

One marker that’s often overlooked is ferritin, which reflects your body’s stored iron. While iron is well known for its role in making red blood cells, it’s also essential for brain function, energy production, and the production of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin.

Low iron stores can contribute to fatigue, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, headaches, hair loss, restless legs, irritability, and low mood, even before anemia develops.

That’s why it’s important to look beyond hemoglobin. Evaluating ferritin alongside other iron studies can provide a more complete picture of your iron status. Keep in mind that ferritin can also be affected by inflammation, infection, and liver disease, so it should always be interpreted in the context of the rest of your lab work and your symptoms.

💚 If you’ve been told everything is “normal” but you still don’t feel like yourself, it may be worth taking a closer look at your iron stores.

Long COVID is real, and science is uncovering why.

For years, many people with Long COVID have struggled to explain symptoms that standard testing often couldn’t.

Now, a landmark Cell study provides evidence that autoantibodies may directly contribute to neurological symptoms in a subset of Long COVID patients. Researchers showed these antibodies weren’t simply markers of illness, they appeared capable of causing neurological changes in laboratory models.

From a functional medicine perspective, this reinforces something we’ve long recognized: persistent symptoms deserve investigation, not dismissal.

That doesn’t mean every case of Long COVID has the same cause. Current research suggests multiple mechanisms including immune dysregulation, viral persistence, mitochondrial dysfunction, and nervous system imbalance.

Our goal is to identify the unique factors contributing to each person’s health while supporting overall immune, metabolic, and nervous system resilience.

✨ Your symptoms deserve to be understood, not dismissed.

A diagnosis can provide answers, but it does not always explain why symptoms developed in the first place.

When I work with autoimmune patients, I’m looking beyond the diagnosis to understand the factors that may be contributing to immune dysfunction and inflammation.

That means exploring things like blood sugar balance, gut health, nervous system regulation, nutrient status, sleep, and lifestyle factors.

Because healing is rarely about one thing. It’s about understanding the bigger picture.

☀️ Summer is the perfect time to reset, recharge, and reconnect with your health.

One of the most overlooked aspects of wellness is the health and responsiveness of your vagus nerve, which helps regulate your nervous system, digestion, inflammation, stress response, mood, and recovery.

When vagal tone is low, you may feel stuck in “fight-or-flight” mode, experiencing symptoms such as anxiety, poor sleep, digestive issues, fatigue, and difficulty recovering from stress.

That’s where Truvaga Plus comes in. This simple, non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation device helps support nervous system balance, improve resilience to stress, and encourage a healthier parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) response.

As we head into summer, consider making nervous system regulation part of your wellness routine. A calm, regulated body is better equipped to heal, recover, and enjoy all the season has to offer.

🌿 Summer Special: Enjoy 15% off Truvaga Plus now through June 27th!

When most people think about blood sugar, they think about diabetes.

But blood sugar imbalances can affect anyone—and they may be playing a bigger role in your autoimmune symptoms than you realize.

If you struggle with:
✨ Energy crashes
✨ Brain fog
✨ Sugar cravings
✨ Irritability when you miss a meal
✨ Afternoon fatigue

Your blood sugar may need more support.

Blood sugar swings can increase stress hormones and contribute to inflammation, creating patterns of immune dysfunction that may worsen autoimmune symptoms over time.

The good news? Small changes can make a big difference.

Start by prioritizing protein at breakfast, eating balanced meals, and avoiding long periods without food.
