The Ohio Board of Pharmacy has conducted investigations into medical spas across the state, finding violations in the majority of cases. This highlights the need for ASDSA’s Medical Spa Safety Act which calls for the regulation of medicals spas and procedures based on patient outcomes and quality care, as well as appropriate on-site physician supervision, oversight and training. A medical spa in Texas received a warning letter from the FDA for allegedly administering off-brand, illegal botulinum toxin. The warning letter followed an FDA inspection of the med spa that found a discrepancy between the amount of botulinum toxin legally purchased and the amount administered to patients. ASDSA encourages patients to ensure medical procedures use FDA-approved products and are performed or supervised by an onsite physician, especially by a board certified dermatologist. ASDSA Federal Affairs Co-Chair Geoffrey Lim, MD, and Advocacy Ambassador Mona Sadeghpour, MD kicked off the 12th Annual Federal In-District Fly-In meeting with Representative Chris Deluzio (PA-17) to ask for support on HR 6160, the Strengthening Medicare for Patients and Providers Act to protect patient access to care by enacting systemic reform to ensure fair payment to the Medicare physician payment system.
