One of the first things I look at with clients when mood feels off isn’t just stress or mindset—it’s nourishment 🥗

In practice, I talk a lot about the importance of balanced blood sugar and consistent fuel for brain health… and honestly, I have to remind myself of this too. There are days I get so busy that I go far too long without eating, even though I know how important it is.

And usually I feel it right along with my clients.

More irritability, lower resilience, brain fog, anxiousness, or feeling emotionally drained can often be connected to under-fueling the body.🧠

One of the simplest foundational supports is building meals with:
🥚 protein
🥑 healthy fats
🍠 fiber-rich or healthy carbohydrates

That balance can make a huge difference for energy, mood, focus, and nervous system stability.

What if the biggest stressor in your life isn’t the situation…

Many people experience something called catastrophic thinking—when the mind automatically jumps to the worst possible outcome.

A delayed email becomes:
❌ “I must have done something wrong.”

A health symptom becomes:
❌ “Something must be seriously wrong.”

A challenge becomes:
❌ “This is going to end badly.”

Over time, this pattern trains the brain to expect danger, which can fuel anxiety, overwhelm, and chronic stress.

The good news?
Your brain is plastic—it can change.

Three simple practices can help interrupt catastrophic thinking:

🧠 1. Think about your thinking
Become aware of recurring negative thought loops.

🔎 2. Identify your triggers
Fatigue, stress, conflict, blood sugar dips, alcohol, or poor sleep can amplify catastrophic thinking.

⚖️ 3. Challenge the thought
Ask yourself: Is this actually true? What evidence supports or contradicts it?

As a naturopathic and functional medicine doctor, I often combine cognitive tools like these with sensory-based nervous system regulation.

🌿 Essential oils can play a powerful role here.

Aromatic plant compounds travel through the olfactory nerve directly to the limbic system—the part of the brain that regulates emotion, memory, and stress responses.
