Robert Cleveland Stallings, Sr., affectionately known as "Coobie," passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at ECU Health Edgecombe Hospital in Tarboro, NC. Born on October 9, 1935, in Jamesville, Coobie lived a full and vibrant life of 90 years.

Coobie dedicated 30 years of his career to CSX Railroad, where he worked diligently until his retirement. His family always said, if it could be fixed, Coobie could fix it. His skillful hands were also evident in his woodworking projects. With his fun-loving spirit, all of the family children would eagerly attempt to escape the “CRAMP” and yell “Help, Murder, Police!”

A devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Scotland Neck, Coobie was a man of faith who cherished his community and family. On March 25, 1960, he married the love of his life, Nellie Newsome. Together, they shared 66 wonderful years filled with love and companionship.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Nellie; a daughter, Susan Etheridge, and her husband Ed of Scotland Neck; a son, Robbie Stallings, and his wife Kim of Scotland Neck. He also leaves behind two cherished granddaughters, Ashley Lund and her husband Mike, and Susie Perhealth and her husband David; a grandson, Jacob; two beloved great-granddaughters, Emma and Avery Lund; three great-grandsons, Sam Stallings, Jake, and Jaxon Perhealth; a dear sister, Pat Lucas and a host of extended family.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service ~ Letchworth Chapel. A Celebration of Life Graveside service will be held on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Sunnyside Cemetery, with Rev. Dusty Sprouse officiating.

When someone is grieving, it's hard to know what to do.

Here's what actually helps:
Show up. You don't need the perfect words. Bring food. Don't ask, just bring it. Say their loved one's name. They want to hear it. Check in at the 3 week mark. Listen more than you talk.

You don't have to be perfect. You just have to show up.

The Friday before Memorial Day is recognized in the United States as National Poppy Day. The red poppy is a symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds all Americans of the sacrifices made by our treasured veterans while protecting our freedoms.

Today, we pause to remember.
