You're not doing it wrong. Teens pull away, and it still hurts every single time.
You ask how they're really doing, and you get a shrug, an "I'm fine," and the door clicking shut. And you're just standing there like, what happened to the kid who used to tell me everything?
Here's the thing though, the pulling away is kind of the point. They're figuring out who they are apart from you, and a little distance is part of that. It doesn't mean you lost them. It doesn't mean you messed up.
But knowing that doesn't make it hurt less. You can get all of it and still lie awake wondering if they're okay, still miss them while they're right down the hall.
Sometimes what helps isn't finding the perfect thing to say. It's having someone help your teen feel safe enough to actually open up. We work with teens and families all over Arizona, in Scottsdale, Tempe, or anywhere in the state virtually. You can book a free consultation through the link in our bio.
