One of the most special parts of our hospice agency is the support our team gives each other. The following words are written by our nurse about our Chaplain:

I would like to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for our chaplain,Ty, and the meaningful support he provided to a patient’s family during an incredibly difficult time.

This family is navigating the emotional weight of having their parent on hospice while also grieving the recent loss of another loved one. In the midst of such profound sorrow, our chaplain offered something truly invaluable—his presence. Through words of affirmation, spiritual guidance, compassionate listening, and genuine support, he helped provide comfort and strength to a family experiencing unimaginable grief.

His visit was a beautiful reminder of what hospice care is truly about. Sometimes, there are no words that can take away the pain, but having someone willing to sit beside a family, listen, offer reassurance, and help them find moments of peace can make an extraordinary difference.

Thank you for showing up with compassion, grace, and an open heart. Your ability to meet families where they are, especially during their most vulnerable moments, is a gift. Your presence brought comfort not only to the patient, but to the entire family, and your words helped remind them that they do not have to walk through this difficult journey alone.

For hospice and palliative care patients, preventing falls is especially important because they often have:

* Weakness and fatigue
* Medication side effects
* Poor balance
* Advanced illness
* Cognitive impairment

Simple interventions—such as removing trip hazards, ensuring proper lighting, using assistive devices, reviewing medications, wearing proper footwear, and having caregivers assist with transfers—can significantly reduce the risk.

Sketches of Lives Lived & Loved: Meet Gary Blackman

Some songs are more than music.

Born in Rochester, New York, Gary Blackman moved to Arizona at the age of 12, where an early friendship with the singer Wayne Newton and his brother, Jerry, helped spark a lifelong passion for music. Gary learned to play multiple instruments, including the guitar and accordion, and music quickly became part of who he was.

Although he once dreamed of serving in the military, life had a different plan. Gary built a 35-year career with the electrical union and, alongside his soulmate, Joanne, raised three daughters. Today, their legacy continues through 11 grandchildren and an incredible 26 great-grandchildren.

Beyond his devotion to family, Gary had two great loves: horses and music. For years, he and Joanne spent nearly every evening doing what brought them the most joy—singing karaoke together. Even after Joanne’s passing in 2021, Gary kept the music alive, continuing to sing each week at the DAV with his daughter faithfully by his side.
Today, as you watch Gary sing from the comfort of his home, with his loving hospice nurses by his side, you’ll notice more than a man keeping the beat. You’ll see someone who still feels the groove, pours his heart into every lyric, and brings each song to life. His music tells a story of love that endures, memories that never fade, and a spirit that continues to shine.

At Elevate Hospice & Palliative Care, we believe every life deserves to be celebrated and every song deserves to be sung.
