Getting diagnosed as neurodivergent is kind of like finding the right size of clothes. It's there to be a guide for you. It's not there to be a definitive answer for everything.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So when I go to the store and I go shopping, I know a general idea of my size for certain clothing, but a lot is going to depend on the brand and the type of item and if it's meant to be loose or tight or whatever it is, right? ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And that's the same thing with these diagnoses. It's meant to be a guide to give you a starting point, but that doesn't mean it gives you the magic key or the answer to everything about you.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So when I go to the store and I go shopping, I know I'm probably not going to be a size two. That's just not the reality for me. So I don't look at a size two. I know to look for around my size, but I also try one size smaller and one size larger because the reality is, I don't know how it's going to fit my body. I have to try it on and see how it fits and feels.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It's the same thing with a diagnosis. You can get a diagnosis of ADHD or autism, and that can give you a lot of really good information, but that doesn't mean it's everything. You still need to learn who you are as an individual and see what fits you.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
That's where therapy comes in. Therapy helps you find what will fit you best as a human, not just a diagnosis.⁣⁣

When you’re autistic and/or having sensory processing issues, going to an event can make you feel like you’re going to war.

The sounds, lights, people, temperature…the combination can be completely overwhelming.

But what do you do when you still want to go out and be social sometimes?

You start by diving deep into what you can handle, what you can’t, and tools you can use to mitigate the overwhelm.

That’s exactly what I help my clients do. If you’re in AZ, CO, or FL, check out my website to learn more!

One of the nuances of autism is that you want connection with others but often feel anxious about going to social events.

It’s like the cartoon devil and angel on your shoulders. One says go and the other says don’t.

So you sign up for something thinking it’ll be great, but when it comes time to actually go, something in your brain stops you.

That anxiety is completely healthy and expected. They key is figuring out what will work for you to manage that anxiety, so you can make the best decision in the moment.

That’s exactly what I help my clients do. No cookie-cutter rule books, just strategies tailored to their unique needs.

ADHD and autism often go hand in hand, but that doesn’t mean they always get along…

Sometimes the ADHD is bored while the autism craves sticking with the routine.

Instead of letting them battle it out, give yourself permission to pause.

That brief moment can often be enough to figure out which need is more pressing in the moment.

When I’m suddenly reminded of something I was supposed to do, the ADHD part of my brain doesn’t seem to recall anything 😆

And that’s ok. Because I can’t force my brain to magically remember things. I mean, that would be great if I could, but it’s not realistic.

What I CAN do is create systems that work WITH my brain, rather than against it.

When you have ADHD, structure is your friend.

What structures do you put in place that help your brain?

You call it overthinking…your nervous system calls it SURVIVAL.

Overthinking about relationships doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you.

It’s actually the opposite.

Your brain is doing EXACTLY what it was designed to do.

Because our brains are wired to seek connection to other humans in order to survive in the wild.

It’s what we call attachment. And how we learn to attach to caregivers as young children impacts how we interact in our adult relationships.

This is what I help my clients do: we understand the patterns so that we can change them, so my clients develop healthy relationships.

When your ADHD hyperfocus decides to take over.

Sometimes it can be awesome! Like when you need to focus on something important and your brain wants to do it.

And sometimes it sucks. Because the thing your brain wants to focus on is taking you away from something else.

The key to managing it is noticing when it’s happening and having tools that work for YOUR brain, not someone else’s.

Cause even if two people have ADHD, they can have VERY different needs.

When you’re an autistic adult, you tend to get really good at masking.⁣

And sometimes, that’s ok. Every human does it to adapt to their immediate environment.⁣

The problem comes when you do it so often and so automatically that you lose yourself.⁣

Therapy can help you find a healthy place to land so that you can form meaningful connections with other people without sacrificing yourself.⁣
