What does treatment look like for acute non-specific low back pain?

First, the patient’s symptoms were managed with joint manipulation, electric dry needling, and cupping (not pictured).

Then……we load!

Time to complete pain resolution and return to activity: 4 PT sessions, 2.5 weeks

It should be mentioned that this patient remained consistent in the gym. She modified movements that were painful, but continued to exercise as her symptoms allowed. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

Video analysis helps to reveal inefficient movement patterns and improve performance. This is a sample of how I would break down my back squat from the side. Full squat analysis would also include a front and back view. If you’re having pain with an activity and haven’t had it analyzed, I would love to help. The app is 🔥

Dealing with hip flexor tightness? Have you tried stretching and workplace modifications without success? More often than not, I will test hip flexor mobility (using the Thomas test) and it will be within normal limits. On the other hand, hip flexor weakness is a common thing that I see in the clinic. I love using this drill to strengthen into a lengthened position. It works well for weakness and limited mobility.

1. Hook a light kettlebell around one foot.
2. Pull your other hip into your chest and press your low back flat into the supporting surface.
3. Slowly lower the kettlebell keeping your back flat to the supporting surface.

If you have a nagging hip hit me up for a screen💪🏼

Should we foam roll the ITB? I’ve seen a lot on this recently, so I figured I would jump in!

Below is great article outlining a lot the recent research.

The Spanish Squat targets the quadriceps muscle and can be beneficial for those that get pain under or around the kneecap. I have found it to be an effective remedy when loading (squats, lunges, step ups, etc) isn’t tolerated well.

-Use two thick bands that are approximately knee height and wrap them around the back of each leg (as close to the knee joint as possible)
-Sit back into the band trying to keep your shins and torso vertical
-Squeeze both legs straight into the band at the top of the movement

If you or someone you know is dealing with knee pain hit me up for a free consult!

The dumbbell pull-over has quickly become one of my favorite warm up exercises. This movement actively lengthens the lats and works into thoracic extension. It’s a great prelude to any overhead or kipping movement.

Points of emphasis
-Brace the midline prior to beginning the movement
-Keep the weight light for quality
-Try to keep your arms straight (I failed this one)
